Why can a chip that is at 1000mhz be faster then another at 1000mhz? if theyre both 1000mhz then whats the difference?
What is cache and what is cache latency?

They will both be just as fast, in the sense that they will produce the same number of clock cycles per time unit (1 billion / second to be exact). Hower, performance relates to instructions being executed per time unit. Some cpu's just execute more instructions per clock cycle than others. Dont ask numbers, because any instruction will take a different ammount of cycles to be executed on different cpu's. Also, and just as important: a cpu design should be optimized to keep execution units running. You'd be amazed to find out how much time your cpu sits there, iddle, waiting for data. Cache is one way to increase the utilization of your cpu. Think of it as very fast buffer memory, remembering instructions and data so that they do not need to be read from (or written to) bigger but slower memory. Its a complete hierarchy in fact, there are all sorts of caches (like ram memory on your harddisk, L1 and L2 processor cache to keep data from your "slow" main memory, etc..)

thanks for that post, that helped alot. I dont think AMD should have named their XP range after the equivalant pentium speeds. This is cheating! It is already well know that athlons tend to be faster.

How are the XP cpu's named after the Pentium range... Pentium 2.2 ghz, Pentium 2.0 ghz.. etc and then you have Amd Athlon XP 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000....

A: axp's are named after tbird speeds, not pentium speeds.
B: how do people know they are faster, when you yourself didnt even know why 2 cpus at the same mhz could have different performance.
"The Cash Left In My Pocket,The BEST Benchmark"
No Overclock+stock hsf=GOOD!
They are named after what would be the equivelantly clocked T-birds, not P4s. It just so happens that they are close the the P4 in numbers.
As for everyone knowing, I know many people who don't know, and while few of them will not assume "Bigger is better", some will, and those people are the target.

hey man! we need to start a poll to see how many fools think like you, regarding AMD PR speeds.

"<b>AMD/VIA!</b>...you are <i>still</i> the weakest link, good bye!"
I didnt know WHY 2 cpus could be different but I did know that they could. And now i c that theyre named after the equivalent T-Bird speeds, I understand. But... I was told by a magazine (PC Gamer) that they were named after pentium 4 equiv speeds. ITS NOT MY FAULT!!!!!

What ?????????
You do know what an oximoron is right ?
As far as that XP PR Rating......it IS supposed to be used a Measurment between it and the Equivelant P4 speed it would take to reach the same performance...BUT to the average Joe Blow on the street, obviously they won't know that, not unless they actually know anything about AMD etc. It's all a marketing strategy.

Indeed I do know what an oxymoron is. And that wasn't one. I know that when Tom did his overheating CPUs video he used a laser thermometer, but I don't know how it works. All he was saying is that while he knew that two CPUs could have the same mhz rating and effectively be different speeds, but he didn't know why that was the case.
well stephen_c seems to be a person seeking information, but some people think they are god in computers and the way they represented them selves is sometimes very insuling/ rude. i like to think of every one in this forum as my friends, but some people are here to prove one another wrong, thus making them selves known as jerks to me and the god of computers to them selves.
i'm sorry to see this kinde of behavior. we are a world in need of peace, but this kinde of attitude is the kinde that leads to things we don't need.
I don't try to be rude, actually that was not my intent at all, if you read the majority of posts I respond to, I am usually nice....Thing is that if you spoke to me in person you'd understand, I speek with a alot of sarcasm......thats what people dont get across from reading what a person writes on the internet, as there is no real emotion.....when I said things like "Do you know what an oximoron is?" and that, it wasnt meant as an insult, its just something I would have said in person with a sarcastic voice...hard to explain, but you probably understand what I mean......It's all in good nature.
And I wasn't being cold at all, well wasn't my intent again, I just honestly didnt understand what <b><i>"I didnt know WHY 2 cpus could be different but I did know that they could."</i></b> meant.....I than read that sentence over in my head for awhile, And i figured that he was trying to say something along the lines of <i><b>"I do not know why 2 CPU's are different, I just know that they are different."</b></i>
Now that I understand, it is clear to me what he was trying to say, its just the way he worded his sentence I couldnt understand just reading it a couple of times, I had to think about it for awhile...anyways....I apologize if I seemed rude or cold.......you all know what I'm like, therefore you should know i'm not here to put down people, I try and help the best I can.......
P.S. As for acting like a God with computers.....I hope you weren't refferring to me, becasue I know I don't even come close to nkowing everything about them, and I don't try to act as if I do either, infact, I have learned a good majority of information by reading posts from all you well informed people in these forums and if I can pass on any info. I know about certain things whether it be by Personal Experience or from something I read or trial and error, etc. but I try and give this information to thers when needed also.......anyhoo........have a great day. =)

Why two CPUs can have the same clock rating, but perform at different speeds. The first guys post was good. But i will try an analogy. Intel vs AMD. Intel does less instructions per clock but at a high rate of speed. AMD does more instructions per clock, but at slower speeds.
Imagine 5000 monkeys and a really smart, nerdy guy.
The monkeys are an Intel chip
The one smart guy is AMD
Now both are given a complex math problem to solve. Say it involves 6 trillion calculations. The judge starts the stop watch and says GO!
So the monkeys start scribbling away. The laws of statistics say eventually the monkeys will get the right
anwswer. There are 5000 of them working furiously ( less instructions but more speed)
The smart guy, will probably take just as long to solve the problem, but since he is smart he will go about solving it in a much more orderly fashion. ( more instructions at a slower speed)
That, in essence, is the difference between two chips. They use different means to arrive at the same answer.
Benchmarks are like sex, everybody loves doing it, everybody thinks they are good at it.
WOW. i see what you mean. and i'm sorry if my post sounded as if it were all refferring to you. i was simply expressing that there are people here that do that kinde of thing.
you were not rude, but since i didn't get the sarcasm in your post it did seem cold. and that was about the only thing i reffered to you, which now i take back that i understand was to be taken with sarcasm.
i have seen your posts. they are knowledgeable and helpful. thanks for clearing this up and you have a great day as well.

Good analogy texas_techie, but you really didnt need to explain that to me
I never thought about it in the sense of 5000 monkeys versus one nerdy smart guy, but I've always known the P4 has less IPC over the Athlon even at higher MHz rating...I just figured it had to do with a lot of cache misses going through the long 20 stage pipeline.........actually, thats probably only part of the reason, as the P4 has to act as a whole right?? as in, everything on the core itself, the way its implemented etc. effects its overall performance.....

Its quite understandable scamtron......No worries.....
Would you care to tell me what I did not explain myself very well on? Because I'd be happy to try and clear up any foginess(sp?) I may have created with one of my posts.......

Even though what you said was not DIRECTLY related to what I had said, seeing how my post was intended at first towards the original poster of this thread, than to scamtron and others who posted in here.....but I still understand what you said =) again, a good AND funny analogy in one. =)
