Hi all. I`m contemplating grabbing a duron 1200, upgrading from a duron 800. I was originally going to grab a 1600XP, but because of price/motherboard incapabibities(SL75-KAV), dont think I can go down the whole mboard, ddr ram, cpu path. So my question is, will this make an appeciable(i.e 250$ worth) difference in speed.

Specs at the moment

Duron 800
256mb Ram
Soltek SL75-KAV Mobo
Geforce 3 Ti200

Thanks in advance guys!!

Why the hell are you paying 250 for a duron?

Pricewatch has them for 64$.

Get a retail and just use that heatsink, probably find a retal duron 1.2ghz for about 70-75 bucks. Hell, you can get a duron 1.3ghz for only 84. Great value!

What chipset is that motherboard? I don't think all chipsets support the new Duron (1000 and above). Since they're based on the Morgan core, which is similar to Palomino, you'll need a BIOS update, at least. The new Durons are damn good, actually, given their prices, but you can get an Athlon 1 GHz for about $60 US now. They're faster than the Durons, because of their larger L2 cache. I have an Athlon 1GHz, and it's quite fast. By the way, you don't need DDR memory just because you have a 266 fsb processor. I use normal PC133 with my Athlon, and it works quite nicely. Fast too.

BTW, if PriceWatch ever dies (like ResellerRatings), the world will be a terrible place :frown:

why don't you try to OC your Duron 800 and see how fast can it go.

It's not just the processor speed though. The new Durons (1 Ghz and up, based on the Morgan core) have a number of architectural changes as well. For example SSE, data prefetch, and improved power consumption, to name a few. I think Tom did an article on this. Anyway, I still think it would be worth it paying $10 more for the extra performance you would get from a Thunderbird. Also, if you get a good one, a 1 Ghz will overclock to as much as 1.4 Ghz. Mine only went to 1.3, but hey, I take what I can get.
