Houston is getting screwed.
Why?
First, the Hurricane is going to beat the hell out of the city.
Second, all the refugees in the Astrodome.. you know, the ones that looted the hell out of NO then left for the Astrodome for safety.. they're going to loot the hell out of Houston.. they win twice.
Aside from that, my company has a plant down there. They called me yesterday when it was a Cat 2 hurricane and said a Cat 3/4 will take the roof off the plant, a Cat 5 WILL wipe the building out. Shortly after that, it became a Cat 5.
Now we move to disaster recovery. If anyone remembers, a month or two ago, I posted our disaster recovery plan. My boss says "move the servers to the center of the 2nd floor, move the computers to the middle high ground on the first floor." That's our disaster recovery, we hope nothing gets ruined.
Our CFO calls us yesterday and asks us what we're doing with the plant in Houston.. My boss replies "it's taken care of."
I'm just waiting for the outcome of this one. I might be hanging out in Houston next year while we rebuild..
It does look to be bearing down on Houston....
I found this <A HREF="http://thestormtrack.com/" target="_new"> site </A> that shows the tracks of about 20 or so different models.... I found it intresting......
Dazzle them with Brilliance, or Baffle them with BS!
We'll see how well the Astrodome holds up. My friend was talking to one of her co-workers in Houston who said the freeway was packed and people were running out of gas clogging it up. I guess a lot of people can't get out because of everyone trying to leave.. a lot like scenes in movies - independence day, where the roads are filled and no one is going anywhere.
I'm also curious to see how the NO people are going to loot Houston..
We'll see how they react to Houston compard to New Orleans also.. I'm guessing they're already prepping for this to be a bad storm considering it's strength... so get ready for the Black Caucus and Black Leaders to start bitching about how Houston is all 'white' (and a lot of mexicans) and that it was treated differently. Damage control needs to start happening right now..
if it goes on the cyan route there, i think NO will suffer a knockout punch.

You know, I'd hate to wish bad on any body, but it might save a lot of $$$ if it did hit NO.... We've already got to rebuild it anyway.... Now we might have to rebuild Galveston & Houston as well....[shrug]

playing along with you for the moment, why rebuild it then? Not rebuilding would really save a lot of bucks.

It will never be rebuilt like it was... A lot of it shouldn't be rebuilt, but they will... & they'll do it again after the next storm as well... Some say it shouldn't be rebuilt period.. I'm not in that camp...
There's another camp as well... Some of these places in FL, for example, as well as other states, have rebuilt the same places 3, 4, or 5 times... This camp says you should be rebuilt once, after that, if your stupid enough to stay there, you can pay for it the next time on your own... I'm not in this camp either....

I hope they just move on and keep the high ground. Insurance companies aren't going to cover the damage. They'll probably pull a lot of it down, but then it won't be the government moving in to rebuild. Take a look at real esate down there right now. It's selling like crazy for really cheap amounts. It's going to be the individual person who buys land really cheap, builds on it, then turns and sells for a huge profit in a couple years.
If they're going to do it, they better build some big ass levies and put some more pumps in that city.. wall the city off and make it a modern walled city and an 8th wonder. haha.
Did anyone else read the article about "Experts say levies should have held!"
I laughed. What idiot wants to lose their job that badly that they'd say that? If I were one of those experts I would be yelling "I told you'd they'd fail!"
I'm trying to find the article which I saw on CNN and Reuters though.. just got a kick out of it.
What's it take to be an expert?
Yes sir, it's a category 5 hurricane. We're going to see flooding and some damage some the high sustained winds.
That's coming from an expert? What the hell.
Go Houston! Riots are going to start because the Whites are going to evacuate and be safe instead of sitting in their houses riding out the 3rd most powerful hurricane recorded.
At least the mayors and governor are doing a hell of a lot better job of getting people out than ray nigin did. What a worthless piece of sh!t he is.
I am sure that the black "leaders", if they should even be called that, will have plenty to say how the white/non-black texans were helped so much better than NO people.
I just hope that the BIATCH doesn't land much more to the East than currently predicted. LA/MS could get another really big pounding if it does...

I was told yesterday that it took someone 15 hours to get to a place that normally takes 3-4 hours.. it's getting worse now.
I still haven't heard what our plant is doing down there, but it's closed down today and no one is there.
I want to see the black leader start complaining about 3-4 days after it happens.. but at least in Houston they're talking about how everyone is leaving.. and NO was a learning lesson in evacuation.

Hey, thats some of our finest citizens
[/sarcasm] Houston did screwed on this deal. Also, did you notice how smooth the evactuation went? Other than some very minor hiccups and the one Bus accident they did an excellent job getting the people out. For those of you who dont know anything about Houston, the traffic situation is alot worse in Houston than in NO.
Im sure everyone here in the states is getting tired of the rumors that are floating around, especially when it comes to gas prices and supply. The small town that I was born and raised in is the home of one of the largest pumping stations in the world. We supply the North to Northeast portion of the United States. All it takes is one pass by the 3 major terminals and depending on the number of trucks that are loading fuel, I can tell you with little doubt if we are about to feel a gas squeeze. Two things have occured in the last 24 hours that are major indicators. Numero Uno- Something caused the main feeding line "Electricity" coming into town to arc last night. We lost power for a couple of hours and so did the pumping station. There was so much voltage coming down the line that I could feel the vibration in my chest. Just a couple of hours is a very big deal. Add that to the trucks that are backed up farther than they were in the days following Katrina and you have a big fuel shortage. Get as much gas as you can ASAP! Depending on how many rigs get damaged and the degree of flooding to the refineries we may be in a very bad situation for the next 7 to 14 days.

This is being considered through some sort of government buy out of the worst areas, I suspect. Even if they just approve the worst hit areas and pay top dollar to the land owners, this would be cheaper than paying for future rebuilding that is sure to occur. But this is an extreme case of bad weather that hits only every 15 to 30 years and I hope that this incident leaves a lasting and positive impression regarding re-develpment.

Even if you take the bad hurricane season out of the equation, NO still is sinking at a rapid pace. The Marsh lands are the biggest problem however. This being the only real barrier when its gone the Sea Surges will be much bigger. I have heard that LA loses a football field of wetland every hour. Not sure if that is correct, but they are definetly losing it at a rapid pace.

I hadnt considered what may happen due to so many roofs not be fixed yet due to hurricane Katrina. This morning, there were FEMA Tarps everywhere "On the Ground" We got alot of rain at times so I guess insurance companies will be paying out claims on property that has been re-damaged.
We had a fairly calm night, alot of wind and a few twisters. Someone in Central Mississippi was killed but I dont know the details yet.

Louisiana is subsiding at a current rate of about 23mm per year, with environmental surveys concluding for thousands of years until the past 150 years a rate of only 3 to 5 mm per year.
This is due to a combination of factors, including the levees keeping floodwater out of the floodplain preventing natural sedimentation from occurring, less water/wetland causing the ground to dry up and shrink, more people consuming water being pumped from the ground and oil and gas being pumped also, all this leaving a void that will fill due to the weight of the soil above it lowering the surface ground elevation.
There are many reasons and factors, and this now is just a fact and can not remedied back to what it once was, so we just need to understand it and work with what is left to protect and preserve our environment for the future to come.

So what's going to happen to those people who were denied their insurance claims due to lack of flood insurance, but now got hit by Rita? Maybe for them, getting hit by Rita is a good thing as long as it wasn't flooding again.
<font color=red><b>Long live Dhanity and the minions scouring the depths of Wingdingium!
Rita basically only caused flooding with her much much smaller surge than Katrina, and winds were far less damaging also, resulting in a much smaller area of moderate to heavy building destruction that weakened rapidly as it neared landfall. And areas 45 miles or so west of N.O. did not get that much flooding I do not think, due to the winds were blowing southward blowing the water off the coastline...

Actually it would be a double whammy for the policy holders. Most of the policys that are in the news are "Hurricane Insurance" policys. There is an exclusion that doesnt cover flooding. So Rita would be more of the same exclusion. Heres my take on the whole insurance crap. It would be a mistake to force the insurance companies to pay for something tht was excluded. They will either go bankrupt or leave the state forever. If they are able to stay in business then every other policy holder will end up paying an increased premium later down the road to offset the losses. Having said that, the insurance companies knew how misleading it was to name the policy "Hurricane Insurance" if they were going to throw in flood exclusion. What they did here was give their agents the ability to sell a product that was misleading however by doing it this way the insurance companies shift alot of the liability to the agent when the lawsuits come. At least that is how the game is played. They should be fined or somehow held accountable to some extent. In the end, its up to the policy holder to know what is and isnt covered.

As far as I'm concerned it's like selling Earthquake insurance without covering geological damage to your property or selling fire insurance and not covering smoke damage or water damage from putting the fire out. It just doesn't makes sense. It's flat out fraud. My renters insurance doesn't cover flooding but out here you only flood if your neighbor is an idiot and lets their toilet plug up and flood your place. To not have flood insurance be part of hurricane insurance is assinine. I think it's kinda sneaky.
I don't think the government should bail out the airlines and I don't think the goverment should bail out the insurance companies. Let everyone and their mother sue the insurance companies until they either are litigated to death or their stock pricing puts them out of business.
<font color=red><b>Long live Dhanity and the minions scouring the depths of Wingdingium!
I think its sneaky also but it is well within the law. I stated this in my last reply. Our attorney general is taking them to court over this issue as we speak. This is a terrible mistake because it will drive many companies out of state. If we have no insurance providers or the few that we are left with increase the premiums to compensate then it ends up hurting many more. We have a terrible problem in this state with health insurance. Its bad everywhere, but we are really in a mess.

That area is currently way out of equilibrium.
You have people living in places that they shouldn't. You have insurance companies not really covering them. You have these catastophic disasters that repeat over and over again yet people keep rebuilding. It's not like out here where we have a big Earthquake every 20-30 years. Out there you have them every few years.
Maybe there's compromise to be made. Maybe if they don't rebuild areas like New Orleans it will keep premiums down. They're now talking about spending 20B on a cat 5 levee system in NO, but will that drive insurance premiums down? If it doesn't then all you're doing is adding to the costs. Why rebuild an area that was economically not doing that well anyways?
<font color=red><b>Long live Dhanity and the minions scouring the depths of Wingdingium!
I wouldnt rebuild the whole city, only the highest parts. The French Quarter and west could be made into an island. The rest would fall into Ponchatrain. As for this happening often, it doesnt happen at this magnitude. The last really bad one for us was Camille back around 69. Of course im sure that some would not agree with that. Most of the people in the swamps "coonasses" know how to survive most of the storms. Its a different world in the Bayou.

I beg to differ that we have catastrophic hurricanes every 4 or 5 years... The last time the MS Gulf Coast had a catastrophic hurricane, was 36 years ago with Camille. We do get cat 1 and 2's on about every 2 or 3 years, but they do not do major damage. And most people that are homeowners are aware that hurricane insurance does not cover floods due to rain, but it does cover water damage due to leakage or structure failures, and the insurance companies are more than happy to sell you flood insurance as a seperate policy.
I do not think that sueing will amount to very much, just blowing smoke, imo...

I was actually talking about the whole area. I think Florida is more guilty than the rest.
As for NO, I totally agree about keeping the French Quarter, for historical and symbolic reasons, but the rest has to go.
The amount of money being spent, could much better be spent IMPROVING the infrastructure and economy of a couple other cities where people would move. Imagine spending 60B each on Houston, Little Rock, and Dallas for example. I'm just throwing out ideas.
<font color=red><b>Long live Dhanity and the minions scouring the depths of Wingdingium!
If the insurance companies go bankrupt or bail out or move from area, I am sure the gooberment will offer the same insurance policies like they have done for flood insurance and some hurricane policies already in hard hit areas.
Either way, insurance and rates will continue, to go up...
But I would see it as a wise investment to buy out the hardest hit areas and require them to move with their substantial settlement, then designate the land with a stipulation that this area is prone to flooding and either build high enough and with enough structure to withstand the types of force of a Cat 5, or else no building will be done on that parcel.
They have done this with some areas of the coast already.
