Hi all,

I have replaced a Palm device with a newer one & want to give the old
one to my wife. However, having loaded it up with programs & data which
she will want, I don't really want to hard reset it & reload everything
on.

I have renamed the new Palm device with a new Hotsync name, leaving the
old one untouched. Can I simply hotsync the old device as is, or will
the desktop computer become confused & think the two devices are the
same one again.

Thanks.

Kwan.

Hi Kwan,

Short answer: no, the desktop computer will not get confused. The name of
your new Palm will get added to your Palm desktop once you do your first
hotsynv with the new device, so you will be able to choose which to use when
you open the desktop application.

Long(er) answer: you will have to load both applications *and* data to the
new device as well. I can imagine you would still want to keep your data
from the built-in applications (calendar, contacts, tasks and memos) that
you used to have in your old Palm device. To do this, you can copy each
respective .dat file from their directories at
C:\Program Files\Palm\[old Palm device name]\calendar (or agenda)
C:\Program Files\Palm\[old Palm device name]\contacts (or address)
C:\Program Files\Palm\[old Palm device name]\tasks (or todo)
C:\Program Files\Palm\[old Palm device name]\notes (or memos)
to
C:\Program Files\Palm\[new Palm device name]\calendar (or agenda)
....etc.

Of course, always make a complete backup copy of your Palm directory
*first*, before copying, moving and deleting files like this!!

Once you have the data you need on your new palm, you can delete it from the
old palm that your wife is going to use. Best would be to do this using the
palm desktop program. The name of your new Palm will get added to your Palm
desktop once you do your first hotsynv with the new device.

Hope this helps.

Rgds.,
Guido

Hi Brenda/Guido,

Thanks for your response. When I got the new Palm hotsyncing a few weeks
ago, the computer asked me for a username. I selected the same one as
the previous Palm, thereby automatically transferring me data onto the
new Palm. Since then, I have renamed the new Palm, but not touched the
old one. If I hotsync the old one now, I guess the central question is
"Does Palm Desktop/Hotsync recognise handheld devices based on their
changeable username or on a serial number which is unchangeable?"

Good question. I would say that your new - renamed - Palm would simply
synchronize all its current data with the desktop and change the name on the
desktop accordingly, thereby erasing the old name.
Now, a handheld device is indeed recognised *internally* by a so-called
hotsync ID (i.e. not its Serial Number). Therefore, I guess that by syncing
your old Palm *after* syncing your new one, a new (for the desktop that is)
user ID will be created with the name of your old Palm. That is, at least,
what logic would dictate...
Still, I wold most definitely make a safety copy of my complete Palm
directory, if I were you.

Let me know how things evolve, ok?

Rgds.,
Guido (Brenda is a nickname... long story ;-)

I sync 2 palms and the software looks for the user name in each of
them. Have never had a problem doing this.
