Installing 32bit when running 64bit

32-bit programs should run fine on 64-bit systems, but I believe some programs check the Windows version and if they don't recognize it, they have problems or fail to run. If you right-mouse click on a shortcut for one of these 32-bit programs that have problems, you can click Properties, then on the Compatibility tab at the top of the Properties window. There you can tell it to "Run this program in compatibility mode" and select the version of Windows from the drop-down box. Usually picking a version of Windows XP does the trick.

... Unless you're running x16 bit programs, then they're going to be compatible.

The issue you're having most likely isn't from having a x64 bit OS, but rather from an old piece of x32 bit software... that doesn't play nicely with windows 7. Is the software confirmed to run correctly in x32 bit? Have you tried running it in compatibility mode?

No.
If you look at C: / Your going to see Program files and Program files (x86).
The "program files" is your 32 bit programs. The "program files (x86)" are your 64 bit programs.
The sony phone companion should be able to run on a 64 bit OS as im sure all current phone apps are compatible. What specific error message are you getting?
