32-bit programs should run fine on 64-bit systems, but I believe some programs check the Windows version and if they don't recognize it, they have problems or fail to run. If you right-mouse click on a shortcut for one of these 32-bit programs that have problems, you can click Properties, then on the Compatibility tab at the top of the Properties window. There you can tell it to "Run this program in compatibility mode" and select the version of Windows from the drop-down box. Usually picking a version of Windows XP does the trick.
