I don't know how high the Slot A CPUs go. I have a K7V that has a 750 Athlon in it.

I did a search on Price watch for Slot A Athlons, and the best one I saw there was a 1 GHZ for $299. I'd stay with a 900 or less for under $90.

ED:
<A HREF="http://usa.asus.com/download/mbdriver/mb-slota.htm" target="_new">Here</A> is some information and a bios update to let the K7V support up to 1 GHZ Athlons.

Do you happen to know if Duron's are compatible or does have to an Athlon (maybe a Thunderbird?).
Check these prices out...

AMD K7-850 MHZ ATHLON SLOT A OEM was the only one that would work for you. You need a Slot A. T-birds are Socket A, as are the Durons. Besides, a 900 MHZ Athlon will still outclass most Durons
