Hey Guys I am a newbie to building systems and have a question. First of all I bought a Retail 1Ghz Duron and will be using the Soltek Sl-75drv5(with future plans of upgrading to a much faster XP cpu). From what I have been reading, it is a very good idea to use a shim with an AMD because of the fragile cpu core. I also read that copper is risky because if it touches the bridges it will fry your cpu!! Then I saw today on a website that the ThermaTake copper shim I was gonna order was not suitable for 1Ghz+ Durons. Whats up??? Can somebody help me out here with a few recomendations. I bought a retail cpu so will be using the stock heatsink/fan. I definately don't want to crush the core or short it out by doing something stupid or unneccesary. Thanks in advance.
your impatient. you should get a shim if you swap cpus a lot, or if you have an extremely heavy hsf, but the one time application doesnt need a shim. would be a good idea if the computer is moved around a lot too.
i went to the tomshardware forums and all i got was this lousy signature.
sorry, didn't mean to be impatient. I am just a little excited about building this system and I guess it's made me a little too wound up. Thanks for your input.
