I want to get a camera phone but they all seem like craptastic cameras. I did see the Samsung SCH-V770. 7 Megapixal camera phone but i could only find it on ebay for $999. Thats a bit much for me.
I am looking for something that can take like 3-5 MP and be somewhere around $500 is my starting point.

Anyone have any ideas on phones i should be looking for or staying away from?
Thanx

With that budget, buy a regular Digital Cam, and get another phone.

Camera Phones aren't that great. Mine is probably a MP but you get lint and dirt on the lens and pictures suck overall. It's more of a gimick if you ask me.

The newest camera phones (K750i etc) have 2mp + cameras which are fine for printing out at normal photo size

MP's are only one, and not the most important at that, factor in picture quality. Even a 100MP phone will have craptastic picture quality due to it's tiny made-in-china POS lens. Plus, like dh said, the lens will get dirty and scratched. Higher MP's will just make the optics defects stand out all the more.

Think of it like this - when people still used film, you could buy a camera for $10 through to $10000. No matter what kind of film you put into the $10 dollar one, it stayed a crappy worthless camera. Same thing with digital cameras, higher MP count is just higher quality film, the rest doesn't change.

Well yes i realize that the higher the MP doesn't instantly mean higher quality pictures. But i have seen some pictures from camera phones and they are small, and they look like webcams from 10+ years ago. I know some camera people would freak out about me trying to get a decent quality camera in a phone....but i dont think i need 45 things in my pockets. I am not looking for something professional. I am looking for something that looks like it was taken on a $200 digital camera, not a $5 webcam.

And yes, i could buy a new phone and a camera seperate. But then its one more thing to remember and sit in my pocket all day. I dont take many pictures, but when i want a camera i never have one.

Also, what places would let me take pictures with the phone and see the results before i buy? Most places have the phones on display but not turned on so i could e-mail the pictures to myself to see what they look like and compare.

What I'm saying is, the only way to tell if the pictures are any good is to try the camera. Out of hand, I don't know any models with good picture quality. I suggest google.

i tryed googling, but most companies say there phones take great pictures so google pulls them up.

Google has no marketing filter to remove the BS from the websites.

You can go through the reviews, many reviews include pictures taken with the phone.

Anyway, I've never seen a phone that takes decent pictures. I would suggest getting a slim camera.

Is there a decent review site for camera phones then? I know several good review sites for digital camera's but they never have camera phone models in review.

I am kinda thinking what BigMac said i looked and saw no website that wa sa good site. if i can get a decent review they only have one phone and another webstie has another...all taken under differnet light and rarely tell you how the pic was taken or anything.

Yes i get that a slim camera would get me a great picture improvement, but i was wondering if anyone knew of a phone that had something decent. I am not trying to replace a top of the line digital camera with a phone, i am just trying to get a camera phone that doesn't suck as both a camera and a phone.

Google always helps. Among 5-6 reviews at least one should be satisfying.
