I image you all remember the cpu cooling video where the fans were removed while playing a quake 3 demo, and how the 1.4 athlon burned in just a few secs. along with the motherboard.
Now, what would happen if we do the same with a Athlon XP processor.
I read something about Athlon XP operate a little bit cool than old Athlons, is this true? Would the XP catch on fire?

read this <A HREF="http://www.64bits.org/cpuheat/cpuheat1.htm" target="_new">analysis</A>

XPs run cooler alright, but they still arent protected, the risk of frying them stays.

using Soltek-SL75DRV5 motherboard will keep your cpu safe.

check <A HREF="http://www.motherboards.org/articlesd/motherboard-reviews/1135_2.html" target="_new"> this link </A> to learn more about SL-75DRV5 motherboard

wish if there was UnDo in the life

First of all, IF a fan fails on AXPs, and the heatsink stayed on, it will survive for over 9 minutes with no problems, and this was on AthlonMPs which are hotter. IF the fan fails, you can be doomed if you don't have the thermal shutoff feature in new motherboards coming out.
The other nice fix, is current mobos(almost all) have their own thermal shutoff from the mobo diode, you can set a warning temp and shutoff temp if you got ACPI compliant system. I set mine to warn me at 55º and shutoff at 60º since the mobo diode isn't as accurate as the AXP's diode which isn't supported by current mobos, but setting a low temp of shutoff will ensure any lower-than-real temp inaccuracy will help.
So I feel my system is protected anytime from any "disaster".

9 minutes?

what if you're away on a business trip and forget to shut off the computer and the fan dies 9 minutes after the plane takes off? you're pretty much screwed then huh?

Not really, as Eden said. Most new motherboards have some kind of thermal protection.

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the <b>ULTIMATE</b> PC processor

ya, assuming it works.

i bought a new fan once and had a 1.33ghz t-bird. 15 minutes later the fan died and the cpu just kept getting hotter and hotter and the mobo did nothing. There is a heat sensor and once it goes over a certain temp it's suppose to shut off... well it didn't do that.

i suppose the new mobo's are a bit more mature now i guess.

the abit kt7. ya pretty old ... thats why i said i'm sure mobo's nowadays are probably a bit more mature.

The heatsink is supposed to help dissipate heat in those cases so it should work for more than 10 minutes or even stay alive if the CPU was not active too much or is idle.
Otherwise yeah new mobos are better. My 8KHA+ SHOULD be reacting in case, or at least warn me. It has a CPU monitoring health on BIOS post, so that shows it can monitor and react on temps.

Yeah, the current motherboards are much, much, more mature. Their thermal protection is based on temperature rather than fan RPM.

I hope we're on the same page talking about the current thermal protection not AMD's new diode thermal shutoff and LED, right?
