You never really mention what is factoring into the decision, ie is cost an issue, or are you willing to dig a 100m trench, etc.

For performance:

best=fiberoptic

nextbest=buried wires

leastbest=wireless

the order of these can switch depending on what you consider important.

I don't know about trenching permits, but if it's all done on private property then who will know?

assuming you mean 100 meters, you could run a cat 5 that far. i would run it in a conduit like some pvc pipe or somthing. fiber would be too expensive.

i went to the tomshardware forums and all i got was this lousy signature.

If you have line of sight there are some pretty cool homemade IR solutions you can build yourself. They are good for upto 300m.

If you don't use home-made or expensive equipment your range will probably not be good enough. Even if you have a clear line of sight most wireless networks peak in bandwidth around 14 megabits, leaving much to be desired. Range is your real problem

Could it go that far? I would have thought you'd need a repeater halfway through. Anybody know the reach of cat5 without needing help?

the specs on cat5 say 100 meters, after that, your on your own as to how much further it can go. cat5 standards mandate that it must go 100 meters. its not going to come to a dead stop at the 100 meter mark. i have had cat5 go about 125 meters, results will vary. the only thing to worry about is speed loss from the increased error rate.

my computer is so fast, it completes an endless loop in less than 4 seconds!
