I have heard that the Athlon XP's run hot...I am planning on purchasing an XP 2100+ do I need something this powerful if I am not planning on overclocking?
Swiftech MC462 or Silverado by Noise Control
If not please make suggestions...it has been a while since I have done a self installation and I am not aware of all the newest technology...thank you

if you are not planning on overclocking i'd go for the retail version, when it is available, then you get a warranty too!

if you don't unlock the CPU...and just do Bios OC'ing, would the retail HSF do the job?

How would life be if there were no Computer's? That would Suck!!

No, with any type of cooling the retail HSF is not adequate. I had a retail HSF on my Athlon, but once I overclocked it, it couldn't stand the extra heat.

it depends... you probably won't be able to increase the FSB more than, say 2-8 MHz with the retail fan/heatsink... you will probably have to increase the VCORE to get more than that, and with more voltage, comes more heat... but it varies... all processors (even the same model) are not created equal...

mind you, i can get my retail 1700+ to run at 2100+ with a small room fan (8" ) blowing in the side

my 1700+ retail runs perfectly at 1900+ with a closed case and two case fans

Edit:The chip is still multiplier locked

Actually amd_man, the new retail hsfs can take a little overclocking, not more than 100mhz though.
