i have recently liberated the old company compaq ml370 Piii server as it was being escorted to the scrapeyard. i intend to install linux onto it for my home setup. it will esentially replace the ancient pc that i am currently using as a file server. it is also an oppertunity for me to continue developing my linux knowledge.
however, the dam thing sounds like an aircraft. its kepping the neighbour 3 doors down children awake. it is something to behold. does anyone have any sugestions on how to mod it to quieten it down, such as fans on the processors rather than monster fan at rear etc. also does anyone know where i might be able to buy or aquire this ancient tech
just get you some big ole 120mm fans and runn them real slow, since theyare bigger the push more air and cool as much as a smaller fan with less noise.

On behalf of all the cretins here I appologize for their deplorable behavior. They haven't been fed, laid, or loved in years and are a bit socially, physically, and mentally retarded.

It's highly recommended to wrap it in aluminum foil, not the cheap stuff, and place it in a freezer or a bathtub with cold water. That should drown out the fan and keep it cool altogether.
Have you even opened it up to see if you could put a different fan in it or a newer heat sink? I mean.. come on.. what do you think you can do with it? Put a newer fan in it, which will be quieter because technology does wonderful things. You could put a different heat sink on anything that currently has one that you can replace.. that'll help out a lot.
Or you could just do the traditional overkill ways.. buy a small freezer, add in a dehumidifier, and put the server in there, seal it up, and you have a nicely frozen server.. and it'll be quiet because of the seals.

well, i'm certainly glad i asked the kindergarden for advice!
i am definatley considering the bath option. would you test the water for me?
on a more real note, i am going to replace the fan at the rear. that is a given. the more interesting issue is trying to find out what types of heatsink will work best on a slot1 cpu, or preferably, what type of good, reasonably small fan cooled options may be available.
on the whole, i realise that this tech is probably older than the majority of posters in this thread, but if you have nothing sensible to add why bother. dienewbiedie ?? gee thats sweet what are you 2 years old?
for those couple who did post sensible sugestions ie the two fan options and the water cooler thank you and best wishes
The problem with slot 1 is that your only sensible solution is to have case fans. Idealy you want a fan blowing out in the top back of the case and sucking in at the front bottom of the case. You then want them to be quiet. So, assuming that your case only takes 80mm fans it's kinda hard to get really quiet fans. Panaflo is pretty good if you were to go that route.
Personally I would see what your temps are doing if you just turn off the fans and/or have the case door open. Just monitor them. Don't let them get above 50C. 55C if worst came to worst. Alternatively, if the temps are going to be a problem you could get a case or case door with a 120mm fan opening and have it blow on the cpu. Alternatively you could rig the case with the two 80mm fans like I mentioned above but have a rheostat to slow them down.
You have options.

Yes, you'll have a problem getting any real help in the "off topic" forum listed as "other". You'd actually get some decent answers if you asked in the "CPU cooling" section under "overclocking", as those guys just love CPU coolers and cooling solutions. They dream at night in black and white of Panaflow and Papst 120mm fans, and salivate over liquid coolers with one quart radiator capacity...

I have ML370 too.
but when i bought it it was with windows2000, and when it was booting the master cooler 12cm were going to lower speed, and it was wery quite.
when i install ubuntu the master cooller dont go slower and quite.
Are you fcuking serious? For fcuks sake, this thread has been dead 3 years and here you are, exhuming it like Burke and Hare. I'm going to give you some proper advice, something that you'd do well to adhere to:
Fcuk off you bumbling twat.
Got it?
