Does anybody here have a problem keeping up? Just when you think you have the best chip on the market a new one comes out a month later. So you go out and get that one, or perhaps faster RAM etc. I swear I am starting to loose my mind keeping up. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. All this power and there is no need for it. There isn’t any software a Gig couldn’t handle, better yet drop in an 1800+ and now you’re over killing. Finally after killing my bank account several times over I decided to slow down. In fact I sold most of my hardware and stuck with my old AMD Gig (Enhance Cache of course). Dropped in 512 MB of PC 133 and a Geforce 2 Ultra and I haven’t looked back. I run everything smooth in fact I run about four things at the same time really smooth. I can download on the net while playing Max Payne and burn a new CD. I guess the point I am trying to make is this, “Too much power and no place to use it.”

That's true in most cases.

software development cant keep up with the hardware advancement.

...we need more competition in the software arena.

Don't worry, the next version of Windows will require a P5 4Ghz with 1GB of DDRII memory and 20GB of hard drive space.
People are always finding new ways of using all of the extra power, it just takes time. I'm still running on a P3-450 with 128MB of PC100 memory, a 16MB TNT card, and a 14GB HD. I'll be upgrading everything either later this year or early next, because I am finanly feeling the need to upgrade.

I have taken on the factor of 4 upgrading philosophy. I'll only upgrade when something comes out that is 4 times better than what I have. Case in point, I picked up a new GeForce4 card after running the original Geforce 256 for a few years now..

So I'm waiting for this system:
5 Ghz proc.
1 Gig. PC10000 DDR Ram
160 Gig HDD running at 28,800 RPM with an equivalent ATA 400 interface.
20.4 speaker sound card (why not - we have 6.1 coming out now...)
84" monitor - bigger is always better... :-)
96x CD burner.

I feel the same way, wouldn’t it be nice it you could use all that power? Yeah sure you could throw in a benchmarking program, but that’s about it. Software companies need to keep up. I know that sometimes its funny watching AMD and Intel throw down. But don’t tell me it wouldn’t be funny to see software comp. get into it. I could see the commercial now, Windows XP 4; we use everything you got and more. And just like are previous version we use it for nothing. ~Bill Gates.

Bahh, I already get a headache from my 4.1 system. I can't imagine the migraine attacks I'd get from a 20.4 system.

don't worry, code will get sloppier, programs and os's more bloated (windowsxp), spyware stealing cycles, games with absurb hardware requirements, having to run 3-4 messenger programs at once (unless you use trillian like me), needing realaudio, quicktime, media player, and god knows what else 20 meg programs to play one type of propreitary filetype. Trust me, if there is power available, things will find a way to waste it in time.

heh, truly I'd love a faster system because encoding/converting takes a long time and the shorter the better! i have a axp1800+ and yes its fast, but to encode a film it takes me about 8-12 hours, depending on the length. so yes there is use for the power, just most of the people who want something better just want to bloat about it

i've got 4.2 in my room, small little thing, and talk about hearing problems. I've got 4 speakers on each corner and two 15' subs hooked up to my JVC reciever. talk about shaking, rattling and rolling. deafening my sound system truly is

Heheh, purchased a 4.1 Labtec system, awesome sound. Only gripe is that I live in a building with little isolation between walls and ceilings!!

You are totally correct, although some people do use the full power of a system, like video encoders for example. My rule is I use my machine and when I find a program that does not run as fast as I want I upgrade. Nothing like actual need! If I dont need an upgrade to run the software I want to run, screw it, its not worth doing!

My P3 1.13 is getting to be far too slow for me, running mutliple apps, since it's being used as a server and recompiling movies simultaneously.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

indeed

cure for cancer, games at high detail, divx encoding...

i could quite happily upgrade by a factor of four with my CPU. would certainly help with DIVX!

Yeah. Or NASCAR 2002 ... the first game that's really given my system (XP 1900+ and GeForce3 Ti 500) any trouble. Time to upgrade ...

Weird though, it stutters at most, dunno why.
It uses Q3 engine, but the game has this constant access to HDD and stutters TOO MUCH. When playing online, absolutly NO LAG or NO FRAME SKIP, even with tons of action.
I wish they'd fix this single player performance problem. I am playing it at full detail.
