i got a quick question. i'm getting freeze-up when i access the net or playing games. sometimes it works for hours, and sometimes, like tonight, it freezes constantly. i think it may be the cpu temp. here's my setup:
epox 8kha+ mobo
antec 400w power supply
amd 1700+ athlon
retail fan and heatsink

my cpu temp is around 131f (55c) is this too hot. the computer was working fine when i run it at 100fsb but i'm trying to run it at 133fsb, which it is supposed to.

thanks in advance

It shouldn't be running that hot, even with the retail fan. Check the connection of the heatsink. Is it on completely? If so, take it off, and reapply the thermal paste on the die, then reattach it. If it is still running about 55 celsius (too much), then it may be your case ventilation. The only way to fix that is buy a new case or modify the case you have. You can drill a 3" hole in the front and attach a fan, as well as an identical hole in the rear for better ventilation.

update: i bought a new heatsink and i was going to install it tonight. i took off the retail one and low and behold i found out that the cpu (the black square in the middle) was half on/off the thermal pad. DUH!!!!!!!!!!!! no wonder it was overheating, touching the bare metal like that. my cpu went down to 45c after running diablo 2 for almost 2 hours solid after i fixed it and will be running it hard for the next few days just to make sure. dungeon seige it due out tommorow, yeah baby!(i hate austin powers). thanks for the help.

you know what they say: kiss (keep it simple stupid)

oh yeah one more thing. does anyone know if there is software that you can run from w98 to keep track of the cpu temp.

Motherboard Monitor will do a good job of keeping track of temperatures

You can do a search for a motherboard monitor which runs in the system tray. Just have to look around a bit. Motherboard monitor is great. Relatively accurate to a degree.
