hi all, well it all started yesterday afternoon.
i got my panaflo fans in the mail, and proceeded to install them in my computer. i have an antec 1030 and if any of you have it youll know that there is a fan mount in one of the drive cages. well i took out my sunon fan and put the panaflo in its place. turned the computer on, took a little longer to boot up, found this peculiar but really didnt pay any attention to it.
Well, then after a few minutes, it kinda froze. not completely, mouse moved ok, more like the desktop was lagging, but u could tell it wasnt performance lag, had a different feel to it. a kind of lag i had never experienced before. well anyway, this was very annoying, as it happened every 3 or 4 minutes, and for more than 10 seconds at a time. i then deduced that since it happened after installing the fan, the fan could possibly be the culprit. (fans = motors = magnets) as it was right next to the hard drive, so i took the fan out and everything worked perfectly! well, then i decided to shut of my PC and fiddle with things. after i was done, i put it all back in, same problem. all i could think of is that i might have gotten one of my magnetic screwdrivers too close to it, and this may sound farfetched, i believe there is almost a 100% chance that this is the matter. well now its getting progresivly worse. i opened smart guardian(hardware monitoring program for windows) and for some reason it said my cpu was 400 deg. F. but i touched the hsf and it was cool. everythings going screwy, winamp just shut off for no reason and the skins to make it look like there was no real windows in it disappeared... then it went back to normal.... sigh its just so annoying. i have a maxtor 60gig. i would REALLY like to avoid reformatting, but i will if theres a good chance it will fix everything. do u think i'm totally off in the magnet prognosis? i dont really have any idea what the hell is going on, i want my computer back, please help ! =(
I have a fan in that HD drivecage as well, in my Antec SX830 case, right in front of to my Seagate Barrracuda IV harddisk. No problems whatsoever.
Instead I suspect that your cards have been damaged somewhat by electrostatic disharges (= ESD). This always happens if one dont ground oneself and the computercase ( partly through a ESD WristStrap ) properly, before handeling the internal IC-circuits. Each time your circuits gets a electronic smack on the face, so to speak. But the computer seemingly still works without problems - until you handled your electronics (ESD-unprotected) one time too many. And the computer suddenly starts to behave erratic and strange.
ESD-related damage accumulates gradually, and the error-behaviour (seen from the users point of view) is similar to software-related bugs & conflicts; therefore it can be hard to spot the difference between them. Read more about this phenomena at:

if he just changed a HDD fan he probably hasnt blown any thing. also if hes hit anything with static then chances are it would have blown it outright. id be more interested to know to what model the harddrive is... what hes doing when the comp lags and gow good his power supply is. i just dont think static is the cause here.
the model number is MAXTOR 60GB 7200RPM Model # 6L060J3
and when it laggs i am just looking at websites, listening to winamp, etc. nothing big. my PSU is a 300 watt enhance. when i booted up today, i had no problems, other than the hardware monitor sying my cpu was at 400 degrees F. but i fear there is a good chance i will encounter the same problems in the future. i'm afraid the fact that the hardware monitor is still messing up is an indication that that electrostatic mumbo jumbo might be the cause, i sure hope its not..... the whole thing sounds kinda farfetched, if it happened enoguh in the real world, i'm sure i wouldve heard about it. thx for the replies
ok my best guess is that your HDD just needs formatting and a clean reinstall of windows. i still dont think its static. sounds to me much more like corrupted files on your HDD. it may be that the magnetic flux of your new fan is slightly higher than the old one which may have corrupted stuff but i doubt it. format and reinstall and see if that sorts it...
