Dual vs Newer?

I have several Compaq SP700 Proffesional Workstations and recently upgraded some software that recommends a 1Ghz processor. For $500 I can add a 2nd Xeon 550PIII to each machine - these all have at least 1gig of ECCram and 10,000rpm scsi drives.
My question is: If I upgrade how much slower would I be than to go buy a $1500 new P4 - 1.8ghz, 512mem, with IDE Drive?

I would say get the other PIII Xeon but im going against my judgement and go for the P4 1.8a .

Make sure its the northwood model with 512k L2 cache.
