What's the black bracket around the CPU socket?

What's strange is, I only see these in SOYO/MSI motherboards for the pentium-4.

Look at the Asus P4-TE socket, just the white square. Then look at any Soyo mobo, there's this weird little black bracket around the socket?

Anyone know what's this is for? I heard it was for the HSF, but then how do you attach it to a non-soyo mobo?

Bare with me, I'm used to socket370 systems. =)

It's part of the heatsink retension mechanism. All mobos come with them, but some (like mine) you put on yourself. Takes about 5 seconds.
