Hey everyone,

I bet some of you already noticed this but: something BIG is gonna happen with some company. I am a daily reader of Tom's, Anandtech, and HardOCP and I noticed that both Anandtech and HardOCP had there biggest represitives flying out to San Fransisco to meet with some company that they "haven't heard from in a while"

Fronm HardOCP:
After being in San Francisco this week on a 36 hour quick turn around trip, we did find the excursion to be well worth our while. If this company, that we have not heard anything exciting from in a while, can "put their money where their mouth is" there are going to be quite a few folks out there in for a surprise.

And from Anandtech: @ http://www.anandtech.com/news/shownews.html?i=3410&t=sn

Admittedly this week didn't go as planned with the GeForce4 Ti roundup still unfinished. Today I'll be hopping on a plane to head off to San Francisco to meet with a company we haven't heard much from in a while. Hopefully I'll see something that makes my 7 awake hours in San Francisco well worth it and exactly 24 hours from now I'll be standing in an airport waiting to head back. The short trip caused me to finish up a lot of things that I would normally have Thursday/Friday to do but because of that I've had to put a lot of testing on hold. Needless to say, as soon as I land I'll start testing again.

There's not much I can say about what I'll be seeing out West but I've been told it should be well worth my time. If it turns out to be extremely impressive I'll do something special with my next post to let you know ;)

Take care and have a safe weekend.

This seems something to look out for...Any informative speculation? Could it be Apple telling us about OS X x86 support? Or maybe ATI with some big news? Well whatever it is I reccomend to keep an eye out...

Or maybe Matrox is about to release a GF4 killer?

I hope it's Matrox and the mysterious "parhelia" video card.

I can't think of a good signature so I'll use this one.

haha. never happen. ever. that really amused me, though. I'd love to here Steve Jobs start plugging the advantages of pc architecture...

maybe, except EVERYONE hears from ATI ALL THE TIME. I just heard from him yesterday, in fact. He's doing fine.

I think you made some sharp observations, though. You should write detective fiction or something. Nice eye.
April 20, 2002 4:39:08 AM

Well, we know:

I doubt the sites in question would make such a fuss about any company except one that manufactures chipsets or chips, i.e. they'd bite for nVidia but not for GainWard.

It's not VIA, nVidia, ATI, AMD, or Intel; we hear from them all the time, 100 damn hours a day.

It might be Kyro, except that I seem to recall Kyro getting bought by one of the above (VIA?).

I doubt it's Matrox, because Matrox's NA branch is based in Canada. They don't appear to have an office anywhere near San Francisco.

Creative Labs? I doubt anyone's much interested in them anyways. I don't think Creative would be moving too fast after the introduction of Audigy.

Any other ideas?

April 20, 2002 5:22:13 AM

Well, what companies do we know to have offices in San Fran that haven't been heard from in a while? I really don't know, but possible companies include: SiS, Power VR, 3DLabs, Maxtor, BitBoyz, Trident, etc. Most convincing is Maxtor and PowerVR, since SiS has made no secret of their upcoming products, BitBoyz is nothing but vaporware, and the others aren't big enough players in the computer industry. Let's see what happens in the coming weeks.

Maybe it is Trident. They have been quiet for a long while.

people over at [H] are pretty sure it is matrox... which i beleive, especially since they linked to the forum thread on the main page... (now that i check, it seems to have disapeared) its here

Yeah, there is some good reasoning there too, I was following it when the thread started. Maybe it's something completely new, though? Everyone's been talking about a huge video card or something, but what if it's something the industry doesn't have yet?

I just landed and felt the need to provide some closure (at least temporarily) to my last post. There are a handful of times where you see a product/technology that reminds you exactly why you are so interested in this industry. Product's like AMD's upcoming Hammer and others are perfect reminders to me of why I care so much about this industry and what fuels my passion. In spite of all of the tasteless politics that seem to plague our industry there are a few times when you really get a chance to see something that makes you smile. With that said I'll be quiet for a few more weeks and then there will be a lot to talk about.

In other news, this Friday will be the 5-year anniversary of AnandTech. April 26, 1997 was the day this all began and I'm trying to think of some ways to really share my appreciation for all of your support with you guys. Give me a couple of days and I'll come up with something ;)

Take Care and Good Night

It's a new VR unit, whose research and development took a giant leap around the 2GHz cpu introduction...now they got the juice to make it home bound, though they do prefer 5Ghz for nominal operation (gotta hate lag in VR, and the new graphics require a mega chunk of ass for the VR setups). It may not be launched until 5Ghz is out anyway.

I'm ready for my headset...anyone else?

Anybody believe my rambling? Me neither...I'm gonna take my weekly shower now.

If I don't get my 90THz AMD Quadraplex system soon, I'm afraid I may just combust right here.
April 22, 2002 8:44:59 PM

I know this is a bit out in left field, but I was thinking to myself 'What about RAM?'...

Maybe someone has a dual-channel 32-bit RDRAM sample running at high speed. Or maybe someone actually has quad-rate SDRAM running at 133MHz to match the FSB of the Northwood-B.

Or, maybe someone has 1ns DDR samples running in a GF4 with an insane memory overclock.

April 22, 2002 8:58:17 PM

I doubt it's RAM, since that wouldn't generate such a huge excitement from all these high-profile sites.

Hmm...Seagate and Oracle are the two that jump out of the list, though I honestly have no idea why.

I don't know, nothing I've heard so far seems like enough to get these people so excited. Also, it's not like we haven't heard from AMD or Microsoft in a while.

If its Graphics, then I bet its either Matrox or Sis (didn't SiS buy triedent long ago?)
If its anything about Operating systems its probably with Microsoft and a new/updated version of XP, I seriously doubt OS X support for x86.
It could also be this new LCD computer systems you can walk around your house with, but then again its microsoft and we hear stuff from them all the time.
Isn't DDR-II on the horizon? maybe its here, and it'll revolutionize memory from several aspects.
Ooooh I bet its tekram, I havn't heard anything from them in years, maybe they've got some new stuff coming out

If my response is brief and vague its because the info you provided is too!

Oh yea and don't forget hard drive companies, serial ata is right around the corner to give scsi performance at IDE prices.
Edited by Oni on 04/23/02 01:33 PM.

Matrox i do believe isn't geared toward the 3d market.

"3DFX" was! i will bet that "3DFX" put something amazing together! Just because the company is gone doesn't mean the guys can't assemble together again under a different name.

I mean we have heard from matrox, nvidia, ati.... nothing from "3DFX" in a very very long time!

you know what!? My dad was telling me how japan developed a CPU that is 20 times faster then the current cpu's out in the market now!

i bet thats it! imagine a 48ghz cpu! (since intel is at 2.4ghz)

April 23, 2002 7:57:03 PM

No, I know...it's a new fab process for making SRAM an affordable Module, and they're going to move the chipsets in this direction, providing synchronous bus speeds and superior data rates for all. They finally passed the SFSB/SC problem of getting it to automatically match the clock of the cpu. Once they cracked the AUiNc delima, the ORVT's could synchronize with the CPVM. Yeaaaahhhh....that's the ticket.

But they're not going to use me for a guinea pig again...took me a month to get that damn RDRAM outta my skull...kept causing me to reply to people minutes behind their questions.

If I don't get my 90THz AMD Quadraplex system soon, I'm afraid I may just combust right here.

they don't own the people though ... they can easily gather together resources and have a new name. What they bought was the 3dfx name and there patents or some of them. Did they buy there buildings and chip making plants and the R&D lab? not that i'm aware of... *shrugs* ... lol

I believe so. They bought the whole company.

And that's a supercomputer in Japan, not just a single CPU. It's been announced, it's not a secret.

Besides, this is something that Anand said reminded him why he loves the industry. It has to be rather revolutionary and completely different from everything else around.
