Remove the HDD from the Inspiron's wreckage. Install it on
another computer. Say some prayers to your chosen deity that it
wasn't damaged in the smashup. Turn the computer on, and see if
it recognizes and can access the HDD. If it does, copy all of
the data you want to retrieve as fast as possible to where it
will be safe. After that, there will be plenty of time to
conduct diagnostics to see if the HDD survived the crash
successfully in all respects, and is safe for continued use
elsewhere.

I think it's 'software and more' that's dumping out empty USB2.0
drive cases that hold 2.5" ATA drives for under $20...

if you only smashed the lcd screen, then the simplest solution would be to
attached a regular external monitor to the video port on the back of the
laptop. if the machine is beyond repair then the next simplest thing to do
it get your hands on a 2.5" hdd adapter that allows you to install the drive
to desktop computer with a standard desktop ide cable and power lead.
install it as a secondary drive and copy your data off.

CompUSA sells a little adapter that will allow you to connect the laptop
drive to a standard drive connector in your desktop system. It's less than
$10 US.
