I've got a 1Ghz Athlon CPU, which is running at around 75 degrees celsius. Is this about to go up in flames, or is it OK? Does anyone know the normal operating temperature range for one of these chips?

75C is very hot for a 1GHz Athlon, it should be around 40C idle and around 50-55C loaded. It all depends on the fan/heatsink and case fans. What type of cooler are you using? If you´re not planning to get a new cooler, you might try some Arctic Silver (cooler paste) that should help.

That's pretty freakin hot...some grease is a definate must, but I'd say at that temp, you have insufficient air flow. You need to do something about that...it will help sustain longer life and better performance if you get that temp down.
