Uhm i`m a compaq employee.. and i think they offer great computers!! So why rain down on Compaq .. what do they offer you think is so bad... i mean can you give a specific problem yuo had..

It is very cheap to diss a company ... i would like to see case material to bac it up.

Its easy to say Compaq sucks.. but i could just as easily say tomms hardware forum sucks (i dont really think it does) and leave it at that.. but that wouldent be fair !!

Hey man i dont know .. i just think i do !!

Well I had a 1270 laptop that was in service for 2 out of the 3 months that I owned. In that time It had the screen replaced, the battery charger replaced twice, the power inverter/charging system was replace, and the battery was replaced twice. Why was this you ask? Well it seemed that when ever you left the machine turned off and unplugged for lets say 6-12 hours, the battery would loose 25-30% of its charge. It could be fully charged, shut down, then unplugged and still lose power. Being this wasnt the most power conservative beast of burden starting off with 70-75% battery life and no plug in kinda sucks. Being I worked as a Best Buy tech I just got my GM to approve a exchange. Another thing can we say proprietary? Compaq are some of the worst when it comes to that. Not to mention the fact that you divide the hard drive into an ondisk recovery. If the computer worked worth a crap would you really need a recovery on the hard disk? The only reason that I got that compaq laptop was that it had good features for the money, aka cheap....and cheap it was. Also as a tech I got to work on all your nice little "Compact" "Compaq" systems. the best ones were the models you had to swing the motherboard out to upgrade ram. Is that enough reasons to justify that Compaq sucks? Not to mention, reason enough for me to never own another one and to not recommend them to anybody that asks me?

Crashmans Top 10 Reasons why Compaq Sucks.
10) They have cheap cases
9) Two words-Radio Shack
8) They cost more than other cheap computers
7) Service Paq
6) Settup Disk
5) Insuffient documentation
4) Lack of real BIOS
3) Weird disk partition
2) PROPRIETARY PARTS
And the number 1 reason that Compaqs suck-POOR PERFORMANCE (as compared to gateway and dell)
BTW-I usaully run settup, then get rid of the sttup partition-the things run MUCH faster on 1 standard fat 32 partition!

Suicide is painless...........

I have been a Information Technology Consultant for over 15 years, and probably 80%+ of the 200+ compaq systems I've administrated personally have had defective, or low quality, parts, design flaws, or assorted problems. Once I recieved 15 Compaq laptops, 8 of which were defective strait from the factory (not due to shipping damage). Proprietary parts would be my next biggest gripe against Compaq. Proprietary floppy drives?!?!? Give me a break! Proprietary BIOS on HD! What a pain to administrate! This, of course, causes you to have to buy Compaq replacement parts (Compaq hopes). I have worked on Compaq desktops that would not let you remove the CPU unless you first broke off the glued-on heatsink (to get at the ZIF lever). There have been many other problems as well. I'll name one more. Many of the hard drives have gone bad after only a few months (thanks to a bad quality drive coupled with Microsoft's hard drive "spin down" "power saving" feature). Note: Couple that with the on-board BIOS!

One thing I will say in Compaq's favor. I like their servers, and have not had a problem with them (the 5 that I have worked with). With something that expensive, I would <i>hope</i> that it would work right!

I own two Compaq laptops, a 1200 and 1700 series. No problems with either of them. <shrug>
