Hi-
I have put together a new sys, have a Maxtor 120 GB HD. I formatted with MaxBlast, and when I try to install winXP Pro, I get an error "NTLDR not found". Have been trying to reboot with the install CD, boot order is OK. What do I do to install XP?

Thanks

My rig has dual wd hard drives and I got that msg b4. I think you can repair it somehow by pressing f8(repair) right after the post but I took the easy way out and reformatted. It's some sort of a bootstrap program for the os. Good luck and if the f8 wrks let me know.

Regarding your problem, you have a classic ID10T error code. Do you have the box the computer came in? ARRRGH

Use boot disks (6) from <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=55820edb-5039-4955-bcb7-4fed408ea73f&DisplayLang=en" target="_new">here</A> then install. Then use <A HREF="http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?object=article.cfm&id=157" target="_new">this</A> link to slipstream service pack one to a new bootable CD and then you can format those 6 disks as you'll not need them. Then reinstall OS :) The problem is the disk you have now is not actually bootable.

LOL-I Dl'd 6 floppies from MS for XP installation-the HD formatted but installation stopped before it even entered XP install due to lack of SP1.cab. So, I am trying the method from Tacktech.

WHY would my XP Pro CD not be bootable? It's an installation CD, for God's sake?

A real installation CD. Whoa, anyway there are other reasons and can be found on MS's site by searching through there knowledge base. The error you got was because those boot disks are for SP1, sorry. Try <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=55820edb-5039-4955-bcb7-4fed408ea73f&DisplayLang=en" target="_new">this</A> if not the same? Or else <A HREF="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314057" target="_new">here</A> for info on your error.

How can you repair an installation that doesn't exist?? He hasn't installed yet, because he's missing the file ntldr.

I remember having this problem awhile back. I wouldn't use maxblast to formatt my drive. I booted with a win 98 boot disk and I deleted the partition and rebooted with my xp cd in the cdrom. I then let the xp disk partition and format with the ntfs file system and all was auto matic from there. Bruce

I just use the XP install CD to delete/create partitions. Press escape when it asks to recover existing OS or whatever, delete/create away then install OS at which time it will format only the drive needed for the install and will also create RAW partitions (which can be formatted once in the OS right mouse click drive -> format). You can choos format type then (FAT/NTFS) as well.
*This method only works for a fresh install of OS though*

OK-problem solved by using the boot disks as recommended. Thanks for all the help. It turned out that the first attempt was with boot disks for winxp only, the set that worked was for winxp+SP1. Seamless install after that and running great!

Thank you all for the help with this problem. Thanks to all of you, I'm up and running!

I had that problem with a [-peep-] version I got off Imesh, I downloaded a different one and it ran just fine without a hitch! Fight the system...especially Micro$oft!!!
