Forum CPU & Components : CPUs Newbie CPU question

First of all I would like to say it is an honor to enter into a community full of such experts as you guys. I'll have to say that I won't be of much help to anyone here myself, but I probably will have questions if you all decide to help me as I am upgrading my computer.

I haven't yet ordered the parts that I'm upgrading, but I know what I'm going to order and it's through my dad's business so it's all pretty much free heh.

Anyway, enough jibber-jabber and to my first question. The CPU I am getting is the AMD Athlon XP 1900+. It has received good reviews, but the consistent complaint was that it gets really hot. I am ordering the retail version through newegg.com, and it comes with it's own fan and heatsink. However, I am worried that the included cooling system may not be enough. Should I be? Thanks in advance.

the retail heat sink and fan is more than sufficient. and it doesnt run any hotter than its main competitor, the p4. actually the p4 is hotter. oh and welcome!

how do you shoot the devil in the back? what happens if you miss? -verbal

Just get a couple large quiet case fans to keep the stale air from building up and you'll be just fine. Check out Page 27 of the <A HREF="http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/23794.pdf" target="_new">amd thermal solutions manual</A> and <A HREF="http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_869_4348^1065,00.html" target="_new">other docs</A>

Complicated proofs are proofs of confusion.

The heatsink and fan that is comes with is more than enough. But if you are going to overclock, then I higher quality heatsink/fan would probably be better. But since you didn't mention anything about overclocking, the one from newegg is fine.

Ok, thanks very much for the help. I do not plan to overclock. I think 1.6 GHz and 512 MB DDR PC2100 RAM is good enough for no more than I do. I play games and pop in a DVD every now and then, and also I burn CD's. I guess those are the most demanding things I ever do. hehe, there I go babbling again. Thanks again.
