Ok, Im debating building a new system and want some comments. Here are the specs:

P4 2.26B Northwood at 533Mhz FSB
Soyo SY-P4S645DX Dragon Ultra w/ RAID 0, 1, 0+1
Samsung 512MB PC2700 DDR 333Mhz ECC Registered
Antec Pro Plus 1080 w/ Antec TRUE P4 430 Watt Power Supply
WD 100GIG HD
Pioneer DVD Drive
Philips cdrw drive

I already have the HD, DVD Drive, and cdrw.

cpu is fine, mobo is fine i think, memory i'd just get normal memory. you don't ECC registered. That would save you some bucks too. Antec case, the best case in my opinion. Hard drive is good, pioneer is good, and for cd-rw may i recommend Plextor?

ahh read the last part last ... alrght looks good but the memory .. i'd get corsair pc2700 unregisterd.

Have fun! :)

CPU may be a bit expensive. You could easily save some bucks and get a P4 2.0A and a nice HSF (maybe TT Volcano 7+) to push it to 2.66GHz. Yeah Corsair XMS PC2700 is what you need if you want to do some extreme overclocking. That money you saved on the CPU, you could spend to get a better video card. May I suggest a Leadtek Ti4400. Overclocks great. Maybe if you wanted the best performance get some RDRAM and a Abit TH7II... Those things are pretty nice.

Samsung overclocks much higher than Corsair, stick with Samsung.

The P4 2.26GHz is currently $258
The memory is $120 for the non-ECC and non-registered while the registered ecc memory is $150. And, since Im not going to start building for another month or so the prices should go down even more.

Ok, stick with Samsung then, but don't get the ECC version. It really is totally pointless for a home computer. What kind of video card are you looking at may I ask?

Currently I have a ATI Radeon 32Mb DDR. If I can afford to upgrade then I will, otherwise I will keep this one for awhile longer. It sort of sucks though b/c my Counter Strike playing has almost disappeared b/c of the non-compatability with the card--even with the fix.

Well how much are you willing to spend? Overclocking more often than not saves you money to buy a video card.

I don't really feel the need to overclock right now. I think I would prefer to build a nice, stable, updated system and worry about overclocking it later. My current video card does the trick, other than the problems w/ counter strike.

If you arent overclocking you would get a better value and performance with an athlonxp system, a 2100+ will save you enough money to get a better videocard which will give you a net better performance than the p4 system.

Food for thought.

not really wanting to get a AMD system and I will overclock it eventually, when the time comes. I am just more comfortable getting a P4 system right now. If the hammers were out right now then I would really consider getting a AMD.

Is Samsung the best memory to get? It appears to be the cheapest. Is there anything out there better? I want something stable and dependable. Is it better than Kingston or Cosiar?

At least for me, yes.
Unless you want to spend twice the price for some overclockers RAM. BTW, it's able to run STABLE at 166 MHz at CAS 222.
I'm going for Samsung PC2700 at the end of July (just waiting for a drop in prices)

Dude, why not RDRAM? Go for 512MB of PC1066 or PC800-40ns.

You'll get better performance if you go with Pc1066 (OC'd or not) when compared to DDR333. You could just OC the RAM and not the processor, you know.

There's no such thing as hell, but you can make it if you try.

Uhh...I've yet to find an i850 motherboard that allows that. Help me out if you know of one.

Heh, my socket 370 Asus mobo could do that. I'm getting my 850E in a few days and we'll see. Never thought they'd go backwards...

I think it's part of the design of the 850 chipset. I've never heard of a board that could do that.
