Dell inspiron 1525 black screen

I have a dell inspiron 1525 and the screen goes black after less than 5 minutes of use (displays fine connected to an external monitor) I can still very, very faintly see the cursor but nothing else. I've read in a previous thread that it could be either the screen or the inverter board. {http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/62706-35-dell-inspiro...} Is there any way to tell which it might be?
