I have got hold of an old 486 that contains a socket 3 motherboard. I have installed a dx4-100 processor, but when I turn the computer on the bios says "unknown cpu at 32mhz"
and progresses no further. Any idea what's going on?

Wow... this is going back a ways. I believe the DX4 100 ran on a 25 MHz. system bus. See if you have a jumper to reduce the speed to 25 MHz.

There also may be a problem with the motherboard BIOS just not recognizing that CPU. Probably would be tough to find a new BIOS.... Hummm... can you even flash a 486 BIOS????

You have to have a motherboard capable of supplying the 4x multiplier and have the bus speed set at 25MHz. Either that or cheat a little and set it at 3x33MHz, on very rare boards that have that option. Or cheat a little more and set it at 2x50MHz, for a real performance gain, on the highest performance boards.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?
