I want to build a stable, QUIET system based on the Thoroughbred, but I don't want to spend the $$$ that watercooling would require. I want to use the 'flower cooler' from quietpc.ca: the Zalman CNPS6000-Cu. This is all-copper, but I'm wondering if it's likely to meet AMD's other new thermal requirements, and result in a stable system?
Any other suggestions? (Someone will probably mention the Silverado... but it's really costly and heavy...)
I'd probably go with an 1800/1900 T-bred chip, and not overclock more than raising the FSB a few notches.
Also - any recommendations for the most stable, mature mainboard? Something that gets along well with ATI video gear, ideally.
The Silverado is past it's prime, they might be well off to release an updated version.
My vote goes for the Alpha PAL8045. Slightly outperforms the Swifty for cheaper. Just make sure your motherboard will handle it (a few either don't have the four mounting holes, or don't have enough space around the socket), and get a quiet enough fan. Anything under 30dBA should be quiet enough.
