when building a system, keep the IDE hard drives and the IDE CD-ROMs seperated because the IDE controller will use the slowest PIO or DMA speed of the slave or master. This will slow down most IDE hard drives as they are ATA100 or ATA133 and IDE CD-ROMS and CD-RWs are usually at about ATA66 or ATA33 or even less. So use like IDE primary for hard drive(s) and IDE secondary for CD-ROMS and CD-RWs.
Good Luck,
