Hi, I just need to refresh my memory. I'm kinda confused now on the differences between P4 processor versions. For example the A and B versions like the P4 1.6A and 1.8A

I like to know on what clock speed did the first Northwood come to play. If you can just give me brief specs of P4 versions such as Cache and if they are 423 or 478. Thanks to all who would help.

It's the die size. They went from a .18 micron die size to .13. The 1.6A, 2.2A, etc. have the smaller die size. They came out with the 2.2A first, but every P4 back to the (I think) 1.6A. They are Socket 478, rather than the old Socket 423, but the latest Willamettes had the same package. As far as teh cache goes:

8KB L1 data cache; 12K µops L1 Execution Trace Cache; 256 KB L2 Advanced Transfer Cache; 512 KB Advance Transfer Cache (0.13 micron)

Thanks for the help! But at what clock speed did the first Northwood come in. All Willamettes are 423s right and all Northwoods are 478s?

So to sum it up "A" versions were Willamettes converted to Northwood with 512kb but still has 400MHz FSB. "B" versions were 400MHz FSB Northwoods given a new 533MHz FSB.

Thanks for all the help again! I'll go check out the websites you recommended.

Correct. All of the 'A' and 'B' Versions would be using socket 478.

But at what clock speed did the first Northwood come in.

First Northwood came in at 2.0Ghz with 512kb cache and 400Mhz FSB on 478 socket. Then Intel also released down binned version of Northwoods that works on 1.6Ghz and 1.8Ghz.

All Willamettes are 423s right and all Northwoods are 478s?

Not true. There are Willamettes core with 478 socket. even new Celeron which are just Willy cores with 1/2 of the cache disabled also use 478 sockets.
