Im not a hardcore gamer, all I play is Quake III, and recently RTCW. Im on a 450mhz p3, 384 mb sdram, and 64mb gf2 mx 400. I want 125 fps constant in both quake and rtcw ( i know ill need more cuz rtcw is a fps hog ). I was wondering what would help me accomplish, keep in mind I dont have a ton of money, say 300 - 400. Also, should I upgrade now or wait a few months and see what new things comes out?

Hmm, only The Ti4600 will provide you 125FPS and that's with a high-speed processors. There's no way to meet your needs with $400. Then again, you DO NOT NEED 125FPS to get smooth game play! You only need ~60FPS with a minimum no less than 45FPS.

AMD Athlon XP 1800+ retail $108
Abit Kt7-a $67
Gainward Geforce4 Ti4200 128MB 225/500 $198

Unless you want to go to DDR, you can get the above for less than $400 and keep your SDR. Otherwise, you'll need to go above to aheive better framerates. 125fps for Quake3 is reasonable, for RTCW, not unless you're running a really high end system.

AMD Athlon XP 1800+ retail $108
Epox 8KHA+ retail $92
Crucial 256MB PC-2100 CL2 DDR SDRAM $50
Ati Radeon 8500 retail $129

still under $400, provides similar speeds, faster ram, but slower video card (not by much unless you consider oc'ing).

Ok take out the vid card since the one i have now if pretty decent, i can upgrade later when g4 prices come down. So we have the xp 1800, the mobo, and ddr ram. Is 256 ddr faster than my 384 sd? Also are u all buying these things online? Like newegg.com and stuff? Cuz i called my local comp store and everything is like 50 bux more expensive, and installation of a new mobo/procc is 80, i can do ram/vc by myself though.

i think 45 is a little low for some circumstances. i notice that on my slow computer, if i am playing counterstrike and i am trying to snipe some one very far away, the difference between 45 and 60 fps is noticable when aiming. 45 is just fine for quake type games where you dont really have to aim, just point and shoot.

how do you shoot the devil in the back? what happens if you miss? -verbal

Unless you plan on playing older games, newer games run better on Dx8 compatible cards, or anything above a Gf3 or Radeon8.5k. The Gf2mx is a relatively weak card, ditch the thing. If you want to save money, get a Radeon 7500 or Gf2Ti for around $60. Yes, DDR is faster than SDR, the 128 extra SDR doesn't help unless you are moving around lots on information, as in servers and databases. Yes, you can get these parts very inexpensively at newegg.com. Very reliable, fast, 1 day shipping for an extra $2.99, well worth it. Just bought over $1000 of parts last week from there, recieved it 2 days later.
