a good firewall that is free is zone alarm.
<A HREF="http://www.zonealarm.com/zap26_za_grid.html" target="_new">http://www.zonealarm.com/zap26_za_grid.html</A>
and it will block people from downloading files from your computer....unless they really have a reason to get in your computer, and if they do, then they will be able to get past any firewall that you have...

but for the general user, Zone Alarm will work fine, and keep the bad guys out.
also, scan your computer regularly for viruses...
that will help keep the trojans off your computer, which open it up like a candy store to hackers....(not the usc trojans.... )

The best firewall would be a hardware firewall/router.

Zonealarm works good in terms of a software firewall.

As for your second question, I don't really understand what's being asked.

yeah, a hardware firewall is good...that is what i have...
it is basically a router, which re-routs all the ports, and assigns your computer an ip address which is different than your internet ip address, and makes your computer basically inaccessable to hackers...

but, nothing is perfect.
but you should be fine with software, or hardware.

to answer your question to my questions.. let me just explain... i have multiple users on some networked computers and i was wondering if zone alarm limits the files that they download off the internet... for security purposes... like zip files and exe's
does zone alarm monitor downloads?

Nope, it doesn't limit them at all. I recommend a virus scanner installed on each computer for the purpose of removing dangerous files.

Yeah, Linux kicks ass!

Seriously, though, if you're at all serious about this, a Linux firewall/DHCP/DNS server (Doesn't need to be that powerful, 300MHz, 128MB and you'll be more than fine, 64MB if you don't want video) and a hub/switch is definately your smartest (maybe most cost effective?) choice.

If you didn't know already, Linux is freely available.

got freesco running on a p60 as firewall/router, not setup as dhcp server as my 2k box does that, it is purely a router/wall. before that I had redhat also ran just fine.

An article just came out from PCMag about this subject, which I found very informative. It might be worth your while to read:

Running Smoothwall <A HREF="http://www.smoothwall.org" target="_new">http://www.smoothwall.org</A> on an ancient Cyrix machine with 48mb RAM.

Works a treat. Outward DHCP Client, inward DHCP Server, solid firewall. Love it.
