ok for the non-extremist ....

I have managed to overclock the P4. Not as much as i hoped, but about 70-80% of what i was aiming for. at 2.66ghz i would have been quite happy. 2.53 i would have been cool. However, i was only able to get it at 2.4ghz. Not a mhz higher. at 2.45 it was very unstable with voltage at 1.55. I turned it down 2 mhz (120/160), set the AGP and PCI buss at the fixed 66mhz and 33 mhz respectivly. SO far it's stable with running 3dmark2001 all the way through. Still gotta let time see if it's stable yet. We'll find out.

CPU Temp is about 42.5 - 43.5 on semi-idle. Case Temp is 38. It's quite Hot over here!

So i can't call the overclocking a failure. It's a success on a C+ , B-.

What IS interesting is that i was told a 1.8 can get to 2.4 easily. And a 2.0 can get to 2.4 easily. Sounds like the same batch of processors. Oh well ... i'll live ... as long as i can do my work now i'm happy.

Can you not set the volatages even higher? 40 degrees isn't much. Since it's also a hot day, I'm sure 1.6V won't kill it. You could always try and see.

xxsk8er101xx, what's the production date of your 2.0A and what stepping is it ?

I read about people reaching 2.7GHz with 1.6A's recently, though most people don't get these kinds of overclocks.

Recently one or maybe more of Intel fabs started producing a new stepping, with a reorganized die which is 10% smaller than the previous stepping, using 12" wafers. The new layout results in lower temperatures and allows the core to reach higher clock-frequencies. The new stepping was meant primarily for the 533MHz system bus CPU's. But since the 1.6A has been selling a lot recently, and since 12" wafers results in more and cheaper CPU's, maybe Intel has produced some non-533MHz CPU's with the new core layout. As the 2.0A isn't selling as much as the 1.6A, the 2.0A's could likely come from a non 12" fab. If this is the case, I expect it to change in the near future in favor for the 1.8A, when the 1.6A is discontinued.

I hope the above mumble jumble makes sense.

I guess that's about right, I don't own a 2.0 but your oc looks to be inline with others.

looks like you got a great system.

i agree...many P4 2A's can only get to around 2.4 ghz...i was fortunate to get one that supposedly topped out at 2.54...

 <b>Who fixed <font color=red>ATI</font color=red>'s leaky faucet??</b>

I'll see what i can do. I actually had to raise the voltage another .25 because warcraft 3 crashed into windows (amazing same problem i was having with my AMD system) so i raised the voltaged went back and it played fine. And by the way, warcraft 3 is awsome!

And your right it is running cool 32C today and it's relatively cool day (72 out i think). During fall/winter/spring it would be cooler i'm sure.

geeze you know what i completely forget to check that on the CPU. So now i have to look on the box; if it's even there.

Ya it's pretty sweet. I like it a lot so far. My computer is SUPER quiet. I can probably turn off a fan or two. Running at a nice 32C at 2.4ghz. gets up to 47 on hot days.

ya oh well ... i never thought of that. I got a system that works (so far anyway) and i'm happy with that.

intel stock fan believe it or not. What i did do is rub off that black pad crap and put on arctic silver II instead. Works MUCH better. Shaved off 5 degrees C.

also this was pretty much IDLE on a cool DAY. On a hot day though it gets up to 46C.

I just got it lol i still gotta play with it some more heh.

But ya on idle, cpu temp was 32 and case temp was 28. Not bad though considering it's overclocked to 2.4ghz.

ok, you fall down to those temps because of the weather. this could be possible with an ambient air around 20-22°C.

So have you taken a look on your retail CPU box ?

Production date and location ?

What does WPUID report in terms of stepping ?

hmmm not sure what your getting at ... but the winbond hardware thing i was reading is definitly wrong.
