havent taken it to a computer shop, one i know that is reliable and the people are good that work there, and they say that the cpu and motherboard are dead..
i just lost my xp1800 and my kg7 motherboard due to a thermaltake volcano 7+ fan.. im not sure how, but there you go..
anyway, the question is..
do i get an intel 4 1.8a or do i get another amd xp1800 & kg7 ?
i have no worries about overclocking, i feel its for the best!m but i must ask a stupid question, how do you do overclock a intel 4, is it like a amd with the softset menu on the abit boards? is it software or hardware done? do i need to 'paint the chip' or what?
anyway, i have this to ask for people OPINIONS and not for flaming whats good bad and ugly!!
im upgrading my graphics card, wanting a geforce 4 ti 4400... or is that worth holding out for the rv250 or the r300?
well, better dash, but heres one more thing..
this is where i get my hardware from..
i am from england so dont worry to much about the prices!!
i look forward to your replies and will thank anyone and everyone in advance!!
cheers for now!

Well this would probably be best. Depending on how much moola you have:
Since you have everthing except the mobo and CPU (hopefully you didn't blow anything else on your mobo?), then it should cost much at all. Now you may want to get some PC2700 RAM too. May as well.
That's 288 pounds; not too bad. Now all you have to do is overclock to 133MHz FSB. That'll give you a P4 2.4B CPU, for 118 pounds!! Here's a pretty good idea of how to do your overclocking and such and also it's a review of the ABIT BD7 II. It shows you how you can easily run DDR354. Not bad eh?
Well what I think you should do now, since you have no comp, there's no point in getting a video card so soon anymore. Wait till RV250 at least, although I don't think that'll be good enough for that system. I think you need to see how it does anyways, just in case. I think that the P4 system will easily outperform the AMD system, probably by about 20-30% although the AMD system will cost probably 100 pounds less.
I'm very sorry about your CPU/mobo. I never expected something like that to happen. Sorry. Hopefully you'll have better luck next time!
BTW, I'm going on vaction, so I won't be here for probably a week or so. Sorry if I won't be able to help you during that time.
well i was kinda hoping for a new pc anyway!!
i have been a little bit 'scared' of intel stuff, never thought that it would that good compared to what i can get fopr an amd cpu.. imjust in a world of my own...
i know that they are super fast, but i just didnt ever think that they would be that good... but the reviews say other wise... plus like said before ive always had amd systems and they have been great..
you say that the rv250 wouldnt be good enough for a intel 4 @ 2.4ghz? well, thats fine but what about the amd side of things? would it be more than enough for that??
im just wanting to go with something that 'feels' right? i know it sounds weird but the amd systems make me feel a little bit more 'easy' when it comes to certain things.. but then saying that, i have just lost a cpu and motherboard, so not to worry, i think i might just give mr intel 4 a chance and see what its like..
the only thing is really that the computer shop wherei took my dead pc system said that he wouldnt touch a intel 4 setup as he hasnt seen one thats as good as an low based amd setup..
i'll look at the review and see whats good bad and ugly about it all...
thank you once again for the help...
will talk soon, hope you have a good time away!!

Considering that you're using a volcano 7 which is a pretty powerful fan it is often recommended not to run it from the motherboard as it can really stress the voltage. It would be my guess that this is why your motherboard is dead.
As for a new video card, it's really up to you. You can always wait for the latest to come out, but chances are the price will be too high. Then you wait for the price to drop on the lower end models when the new video cards come out and you never end up winning. ATI says that their prices on the R300 will be much lower than the GF4 cards and better performing, so in this case it may be a good idea to wait. But then, Nvidia will be launching the NV30 shortly after, and I'm sure the price will be ridiculous on those.
the trouble with the fan thing is that i connected it to a hard drive power connection and the fan worked fine, shame about the poor cpu tho..
well, regards to the graphics card, i think i will probably get a rv300 because its fast, its made by ati and it will be quicker than a geforce 4? well, thats just a bonus then!! but if its costing less than a top of the range g4 ti 4600, then great, but the question is how much cheaper is it and how much faster is it?
well, as for the setup that chuck232 recommended, i think for the time, im just going to stick with the amd setup.. after much consideration i believe its the best thing to do, as for the cost of a intel setup, i could have two new amd setups.. im thinking thats a lot better than any overclocked p4 !! no disrespect to anyone that has them, they look like a good cpu, but i just dont think that they are for me..
i dont mind amds, i will just get someone else to put the fan on this time!! thank you for your input...
i like having various amounts of people saying whats good bad and ugly about things... it gives me a more open view on what other hardware is like.. thanks again!!

If they still have P4 1.6As in your local shop, I'd highly recommend a P4. The 1.6As overclock like mad with heat or stability issues. Now, I'm both an AMD and Intel user, and AMD doesn't seem any less stable than Intel but Intel processors have the unique ability of being able to withstand higher temps while maintaining stability. This allows for better overclocking with getting any extra cooling. Otherwise, AMD and Intel are equal.
