I have a pentium 4 1.7 ghz... (S-478)
I was just wondering how hot is too hot for this cpu? I can't really find temperature specs on intels homepage.. does anyone know a reasonable number?
Right now, my idle temp is 63 deg C / 145 deg F.
it's gone as high as 79 C.
Is this normal or should i be looking for a new cooling system?

Zazoo.

I haven't heard much on intel chips that hot. I think you should check your HS fan and make sure it is working. Also if you haven't installed a HS before then make sure you didn't put too much or too little paste on it. What I do is dab it with my finger so that it has the little spiks looking things standing up. Then I do the same to the HS where it will connect. That should be about the right amount. I definetly think something is wrong with it since you Intel chip is warmer than my AMD chip. Good luck and I hope you get it working right.

Crap, all the good ones are already taken.

63c @ idle seems a bit high. most plp will have their CPU running at around 50c. install aditional case fan for lowering your case temperature ( improve air flow ), which also lowers your cpu temperature, check if thermal compound are been applied correctly.

I would scrap off excess thermal compound from both heatsink and cpu. Wipe off all traces on the cpu, and then apply the heatsink with the thinest possible layer and you should be fine.

yes, its too hot. good avg 50°C without OC.

i thought the P4's trottled down when they reached a temp over 60c?

Only if yo have this set-up in your BIOS

63 degrees sounds pretty warm for a P4. I have AXP 1800 that runs at 59 idle and 63 when I play GTA 3 and Warcraft 3 (both running at the same time). I would check HSF. Is it retail fan? Also check with www.arcticsilver.com to check for application procedure of thermal compounds. If you read over it, you will see alot of do's and dont's that ppl here forget to mention when applying thermal compound.

My 2 cents

No, the chip does the actual throttling. It throttles down until it locks up completely. The BIOS/MOBO has nothing to do w/ it. I don't know at what temp it takes it's first step down. Will look into that.

I sold my sig for $50.

if the cpu speed slows down or stops. then its too hot.

U mean that if it happens a lot in the end the chip no longer worx?cause its happened to me about 3 times it shut down at 60*c.

What about Duron 1.2? do the temps correspond with AthlonXps? Mine is running at prox. 51C without overclocking! I Oc'd it once at 1368 , it ran stable at 57C! I have a Soltek SL-75DRV4 Mb with 512 Mb Pc 2100 ddr-ram!

No, it's a safety. The processor is chugging along nicely and, UT OH! A wire gets caught up in the heatsinks fan. Now the processor lost it's active cooling. It's now relying only on the heatsink, and its starting to get a little warmer. (For example only) Your 1.7 goes down to 1.5 in order to cool off a little. But wait! It's still getting hotter! Now it decides to go down to 1.3....But guess what? The dissapointed little processor gives up, because even at 1.3ghz, it's still getting hotter. It shuts off! Now your computer is stuck! Oh no! You press all the buttons on the keyboard, click the mouse, and then YOU give up and hit Reset. The processor is cool again, and the wire was miraculously pulled from the heatsinks fan by the BUS faries......Processor never knew it was ever that hot, and runs like new.

This sig runs too hot.

I have a Intel 1.6 Gig that idles around 39 to 40 degrees C. I have 4 different fans installed, but the idle temp will increase to around 45 degrees C if the computer room door gets closed, and air flow gets shut off.I don't play video games,or use intense graphics programs so I'm not sure what a heavy load might indicate.

If ya don't ask..How ya gonna know.
