Ok, just found out my freind got a new compaq w/ P4 1.6Ghz, and I wanna know how I can tell if it's a 1.6a so I can OC it. Also, u just need to raise fsb, right?

My frog asked me for a straw...dunno what happened his ass all over the place

Physically, it has far more pins, (478 compared to 423 for a Willy). Also, you could check in Windows using WCPUID. Right, you raise the FSB to OC it, multiplier is locked at 16 for a 1.6Ghz Pentium 4 (Willy or NW).

the only way i can come up with (without taking everything apart) is by monitoring the VCore VIA the BIOS (if possible) or installing MBM5 and checking the VCore...as you know...a Vcore of ~ 1.5 is a northwood (P4 w/ "A" ) and ~1.75 is the older willy core.

Lol, *shrugs* either way, they both work.

thx, I'll check out cpuid. How much can I expect to oc it w/ stock cooling- 2.4Ghz?

Go for more man! Well, in all seriousness, probably 2.4-2.7Ghz with stock cooling. You have plenty of headway with your CPU, it's more dependant on the quality of your ram.

id be a little more conservative...
try 133 FSB (2.13 ghz) 1st...then work from there...
id expect it to get at least to 2.4...but thats being a little ambitious...

Well, just considering that a 1.6a is usually a 2.0a downbinned, 2.0 to 2.13 is only a 133Mhz gain, I would think a 1.6a could probably hit around 2.4 or more if he's got a good yield. Just as long as he slowly increases the FSB, he won't kill it.

i wasnt worried about him killing the cpu...i just didnt want him to have high expectations and end up getting a 200mhz overclock rather the the near 1 ghz overclock a lot of people are getting...
and besides...we dont even know if that 1.6 P4 is a northwood or not...

*slaps forehead* I forget, it could be a *shudder* willy P4...let's hope to god its not

In that case I OC it to 10Ghz w/o any cooling.

check this <A HREF="http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/hwGuides/article.php/10709_1380951__7" target="_new">link</A> for overclocking.

It's gonna have more cache. 512KBs.

I sold my sig for $50.

please remember that there are lots of Williamette's running on socket 478....

Ah true yes, but still, you'd be able to tell using the other methods, and besides, it would still suck anyway to have a Willy.

yeah Williamette is not as desireable as Northwood, i think looking at the amount of cache is the easiest way to differentiate.

Thanks, now I can know for sure. P4's still have antioverheat protection where they just underclock, right?

My frog asked me for a straw...dunno what happened his ass all over the place

Reply to Flamethrower205

Not underclock, but throttle down the Mhz to reduce the CPU cycles, thus lowering heat to an acceptable level.

Can the throttle down be monitored (speed of cpu) like using mbm or wcpuid besides noticing the machine slowing down?

 :frown:        - What do you want to feel today? :)

You know, I have no idea...that's a good question. Anyone here have a Pentium 4 and would like to take their heatsink off?

WCPUID tells you how many KB of L2 cache you have, the "A" has 512k while the earlier had 256k.
