I was wondering if it might not be better to get a duron or celeron processor for a laptop rather than an Athlon or Pentium 3/4. I want to buy a laptop and expect to work outside on the deck, coffee shop, etc. It will not be in an air conditioned environment. Given that both the Athlon and P4 run quite hot, I was wondering if it would be a good idea. Otherwise, I expect that the processor would be prone to overheating and shutting down or throtling back frequently. I do have a desktop so, although I would like to be able to play games on my computer. . .it isn't a requirement. Otherwise I would just expect to do office apps on the laptop and some statistical number crunching.
both companies have gone to considerable length to design novel cooling solutions for laptops. (heatpipes, horizontal fans etc)
there is no reason why they wouldnt work in demanding conditions...but expect the coling fans they do have to be working at full speed pretty much all the time, and for the case itself to get pretty warm.
if you want the coolest around though, look for the slowest cpu in a die size, i.e. the 1000mhz p3/celleron tullatin, the P4M @ 1.6 the XP 1700+ etc
So I fixed my BIG PC problem by pressing the reset button. I'm not a moron am i?
you might look into a dell computer, their cooling is suppose to be very well designed, my friend purchased a toshiba and it overheats like crazy when he plays games for extended periods of time.
