Is it possible to take my pIII 800 with 512 pc800 rdram and then swap in a new motherboard and new pentium processor while still being able to reuse the pc800 rdram.

You bought a p3 with rdram, OUCH.

Yes, but you will need 2 sticks for the p4 systems, unless you have 2x256 you will need to get another stick of pc800(512 megs making a grand total of 1gig).

On the upside you will have a kickass system with 1gig of ram.

i do have 2 sticks of 256, but unless something has changed, i thought you could just purchase a continuity module.

The p4 does not allow single channel rdram operation, it is entirely dual channel in nature and will not work without 2 equal sticks of rdram, the fact you have 2x256 is very good because you can simply get an i850 board and reuse the rdram.

Crimms were only for single channel p3 rdram systems(which were horrible btw).

now by dual channel there are 4 slots right, so is 2 rimms working, won't i need four.

You need only 2, the other slots are empty, if you added a third rimm you would then need a fourth to make it work.

All the slots dont have to be filled, only in pairs.

(think of it as having a single stick of dram split in 2 to improve access time, like a raid0 array kind of).

YOu need two or four like the name implies. The board will come with two CRIMMs for the empty slots, which can be filled later if you choose.

also on the motherboard i was thinking of purchasing it says to run at 533 fsb it need pc800-40 rdram, as opposed to pc800-45 rdram. How do i find out whether my ram is pc800-40 or pc800-45.

oh by the way i am looking at is the Intel Motherboard D850EMV2 for P4 478 Processors INTEL D850EMV2 P4 533MHZ SOCKET 478 RDRAM ATX mboard WITH AUDIO AND USB 2.0 Support PC1066 RAMBUS
which i would be purchasing from newegg.com

Also do you guys have any recommendations for a different motherboard than the one i am looking at. What i am going to do is take out my old mobo, P3, put those away, put in the new mobo with a p4 1.6a and my old rdram. I then plan to overclock the p4 to 2.2 or 2.4. Do you guys have any reccomendations for a new motherboard which allow the overclocking to be easier or more stable?

Your gonna need a different power supply than the current one you have, cause P3's used little....lemme guess, you have something around the 115watt range? I'm thinking you're gonna need like a 350W power supply.

My frog asked me for a straw...dunno what happened his ass all over the place

Reply to flamethrower205

whoa, your right, i geuss i do, but is 350 gonna be enough or should i go for 400

Enermax 350 W psu is good, 431 if you want super power(but the 350 should suffice).

"ok i got it. I put the two in say the first 2 slots and then leave the other 2 empty?"

No. There's going to be two channels, put one ram stick and one C-RIMM in each channel. The Mobo should come w/ 2 C-RIMMs.

Channel 1
Slot-A gets a RAM stick
Slot-B gets a C-RIMM

Channel 2
Slot-A gets a Ram stick
Slot-B gets a C-RIMM

Dont put the two ram sticks in the same channel.

I sold my sig for $50.
