My eee notebook is overheating at port

where the charger connects to the computer is overheating, and at times the computer overheats
at the same time.
The icon shows that it is charging, but it
doesn't charge or minimal charging.

Is there a cure, do I need a new battery
what do you think.

new battery for sure (at the end of their life time those things start to generate tons of heat) and might be new charger as well

Personally, I would not spend any money on a dying notebook..

I would save money to buy a real laptop

I say get a battery for it off eBay. No sense in paying more on one direct from Asus at this point.
