cpu benchmark scores

How are the scores for the cpu benchmarks figured (directx 8.0 and Office/internet)? What do they measure? (Athlon 2200 article)

they usually mesure caculations, such as division, multiplication, running through sets of information or decifering code. Also they use coding and decoading. The other tests would be ram speed and hard drive speed (write and read) access times, ect, ect
