Tommorow I will be finally getting a new computer! wh00p! But I need some help picking out components PLEASE GUYS HELP ME! I've got really really limited funds so I've gotta keep the price under $650 (CDN). Ya I know it'll be hard but here's a few options that I've thought of so far...
Asus A7S333 SIS745 DDR w/sound $115.00 or Microstar KT3 Ultra DDR KT333 w/sound $139.00
Duron 1200 SktA Retail $99.00 Duron 1200 SktA OEM $89.00 (Is OEM as good as Retail?)
256MB DDR PC2100 $110.00 or 256MB DDR PC2700 (Brand) $119.00
Maxtor 40GB IDE 7200Rpm $119.00 or Seagate Barracuda 40GB 7200Rpm IDE $115.00
Nvidia GeForce4 MX440 64MB DDR TV/Out $129.00 or Abit Siluro GeForce4 MX440 64MB DDR TV/Out $139.00 or Radeon
Case Already picked @ $80
I don't really care about overclocking so that isn't a biggie and I'm gonna be using it primarily for games and general school/surfing/apps use. I guess it's easy to just pick the most expensive products but then I'll go over Any help on any of these components would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks!
Asus Mobo (they make good stuff) $115
Duron Retail ($10 for the included fan is ok - OEM == no fan) $99
PC2700 RAM (Crucial brand if you can wait a day for delivery == cheap and good) $90
Maxtor HD (fast and qood) $119
Case $80
I presume the first vid card is a no-name card? Might be ok, might not... So, Abit @ $139
Total: $642
Edit: Oops. RAM price was in $US, so adding the extra will send you over budget. I'd settle for a "generic" vid card, and generic ram (but test it / burn-in first). That will come to $652, and if you REALLY can't find $2 for the difference, drop back to the Barracuda. Except now I've just listed all the cheapest components apart from the CPU which was only to use the OEM fan...

Ok I could probably spare MAYBE $30... The card is ChainTek which I heard actually is pretty good... So after some further research this is my final question. I can go with the Cheaper Asus A7S333 (that's SiS not VIA) and get an Athon XP 1600 OR get the MSI board and get a Duron 1200... descisions, descisions... (thanks again for the help!!!)
That's a tough one. The KT333 chipset seeems faster, but if you're not using PC2700 or not overclocking, then what's the point? And the XP will be able to make better use of the faster board.
For a budget machine, I would go actually for the Asus + Duron, save some cash, and upgrade both at a later date if you decide you need more speed.
That sounds good except for the fact that I want to upgrade this puppy in about a year. I plan on keeping the board and sticking a top o the ling Athlon, Vid Card and Ram into her. So I'm thinking maybe keep the Duron and go with the MSI board.
Fair enough. I really don't think top-o-the-line stuff will work too well with 1 year old tech, but that aside, the MSI + Duron will be the choice for post-build upgrades.
Final cost (drumroll please) $671.00 CDN (I'm sure I can sneak an extra $21 without my wife noticeing
Wh00p!!! This baby although not top of the line is gonna kick the crap outta those prefab celeron $1500 machines that they sell in the stores And anything is better than my relic (AMD K6@266, 4Gig HD, 2MG onboard crap, 96 MG pc100 RAM) I'm so glad I decided to build one... now the hard part putting her together! I'm sure I'll be around the forums fer awhile Thanks fer yer help! (If anyone hears anything bad about that MSI board or has any other comments in the next 12 hours or so plz let me know! I'll be checking!)
