I am so surprised how stupid people are. For the last couple of weeks I've been getting quotes done (and then work done) on just about everything at work from cleaning, electrical work, plumbing, painting etc.

First of all some of these people that show up have the most outrageous quotes. We finally got the painting done for $1850 but one lunatic quoted us $4500 and just bragged about how many movie star homes he did. I don't care how many movie star's homes you painted!

Then there's the people who come out here and don't speak a lick of english. Very frustrating.

Then there's the guys that kinda merge with the category above who come out here spend an hour figuring out a quote and then never give one. I guess they don't have a fax machine. ARG!

Then there's the idiots who must be too rich to work since they won't come out to give a quote for a week or at best a few days. If I need a quote I don't want to wait a few days.

Then there's the people like today. I need some ironwork done (security gates and fencing for a dock ramp). I make a 9 am appointment on my day off and they don't even show up. I then call them and their mailbox is full. Really lame. Really really lame. I've got one quote so far and I guess I'll have to get a quote from the monkey who wouldn't come out for a few days.

Wait. Phone call. They just called. They're 30 minutes late. Bastards!

I'm just kidding of course. Painting is a giant pain in the arse. I'm now writing this between coats! I'd pay somebody to do it, but I know I'll be dissatisfied. When I do it, it'll be perfect.

It's hard to find a good contractor. I do most everything around the house myself, but on occasion we need a real pro. One of my girlfriend's best friends from highschool is awesome. He's good and fast. And when it comes time to pay him, he says don't worry about it. We have to track him down to send us a bill!

It's a business. I don't have a loading ramp in my home. LOL

I have a lot of other things to do and I already work 8-12 hours a day. It's not cost effective, or rational, to have me painting let alone doing the plumbing, installing the alarm system, fixing the roof etc.

Yeah, friend had her cabinets done and I think she paid around that. She said the worst part was how gross it was when she took down the old ones. There must have been rats in the house at one point since there was a lot of droppings.

I haven't taken out the old cabinets and I KNOW that there will be mold behind the lower ones. Have to get some other form of storage as an interim beofre I take out the old ones. I guess that I have been hesitating because it's just one more thing to do. That and I'd like to get ONE room done for a sense of progress before I start more projects. Like my Dad always said "Wish in one hand and sh1t in the other - see which one gets filled first."

there is a reason these people are painters and steel workers..... they arn't exactly the most motivated people, nor the most educated.

expect nothing more from your average trade person. there are of course exceptions and i have met some increadibly smart trades people, these are the ones who start managing their own comapnies employing others to do the work for them.

For that kind of money you could buy the supplies and equipment, then do it yourself. Then get the same money from someone else to do their cabinets, paying for the equipment after covering their supplies. Free tools. Third job you'd pay off your own supplies and make a few dollars to boot!

most tradespeople i know (and i know a lot) are only tradesmen because they failed at everything else. i.e. they are tradespeople because its the only job they could get.

there are exceptions as i have said, so stop having your period and go get a tampon.

Good painters are really hard to find, and the good ones are expensive, of all the time I've been in construction I've know 4 exceptional standouts, that were not alcoholics or drug addicts, and that is 4 out of quite a large number of people.

One out of those 4 was a painting Master, not only was he proficient in painting but also staining and high end finishing, he could mix on site his own paint and stains, now he was damn good!

The problem today doesn't just fall into trades its people that want something handed to them and not work for it, I've seen some of the sorriest work come from so called professionals, some so bad you wouldn't believe it.

Thats why the Mexican workforce is doing so good today but killing the American average skilled worker, because they'll do the same job for less money and break their necks to do it right for you, something that seems to be lost in some Americans today, but better get back soon or America will have to change its name to Mexica

The really exceptionally good tradesmen don't even advertise and stay busy, its word of mouth that keeps them going from one job to another, because they've given their customers what they've paid for and more, you need to ask around and find out whos trustworthy and who people have used that were dependable, otherwise you're just taking a chance.

Theres a big difference between a person that picked up a hammer or paintbrush and found they could make some money, than those that were actually trained to do what they do, the biggest problem for you is weeding out the imposters, and thats not so easy.

Well just tell them to put the paint on the walls and quit tasting it, and they won't have to cut the taste out of their mouths, no offence to you RC but I've heard the same lame excuses where I live, and you know thats just basically an alcoholics excuse.

If a person wants to drink, just drink and be proud of it, don' blame the acquired drinking habits on their job they chose to support the drinking habit, if they quit painting will they quit drinking? No!

North or South that excuse still stands, I've painted and stained and varnished a lot of projects I've done for people simply because I didn't want someone to come in, do a halfassed job and mess up all my hard work, and I never started drinking because of paint taste in my mouth. That excuse will probably last forever! LOL

Played SS2 online quite a few times now, still haven't found all the secrets yet, but there is one Seriously irritating thing that Croteam did in their software they shouldn't have and I hope they ammend it with a limiting patch from the complaints they're getting from the players.

In cooperative mode when you select unlimited ammo, the Serious Bomb is included and some of these sorry players fascinated with the Serious Bomb will use it instead of fighting their way through the game, very irritating, and sometimes will give you no exploration time at all.

What I like to do is kill everything in an area and then look around for the secrets, before continuing forward, thats really my reason for using unlimited ammo in the frist place, and these guys just ruin that period.

Theres some levels in the game that when the last enemy dies the level automatically advances without going through a door or opening, and if the Serious Bomb is used multiple times in those levels you don't get to see anything at all without the game advancing.

I'll be glad when some of us can go in as a team and just explore without screwing it up for each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once I get the game this week, I'll play online with you.....

That's why I got out of the WOGL & quit online gaming... It got to be the same way on T2.... Hopefully things will change & I'll enjoy it again...

With T2 it was 16 man teams that competed... Keeping a 16 man team, well, 24 with alternates to make 16 at match time, is a night mare... Offense, 8 men would practice together... Defense, 8 men would do the same... Communications are paramount... All of this on 56k at the time!!!!

The first time one of matches was Shout Casted, that was pretty  though...

I am playing FEAR right now....

I hate to have to defend alltaken!!! But he did say [average] maybe he should have said [As a general rule] or something like that, but he still wasn't talking about every trades person on the planet, and he also indicated that.

There are multitudes of excellent trades people that are absolutely tops in their fields, and they don't have to defend themselves to anyone, they know they're the best of the best, and everyone thats ever hired them knows it too, and theres also the undesirables out there too. Ask dhlucke, he'll tell you!

Just a FYI...when we budget for cabinets the number we use is $250 a box. This gives us a starting point for a cabinet allowance and if the right cabinets are chosen it can be done for this amount. (I'm referring to new construction btw)

When figuring, count the dishwasher and refrigerator space as a box. Prices may be different in your area tho...

well you could start by reading my post. and realising everything i say is not a statement against you.

Intention and perception..... was i intending to insult all tradespeople? no, because i know some good ones. was i intending to insult lazy tradespeople who end up in the job because they arn't educated and need some cash? yes.

you ever had undercover programs for TV that hire tradespeople, film them, then send them letters saying if they have done well, or done poorly then asked them to explain themselves?

well the one here has 1 out of 4 home tradesmen absolutly sucking, or stealing from the owner/looking at porn....

funnily enough a lot of the great tradesmen get busted for having a look in the underpants drawers.

and no this show doesn't select the worst of the bunch, nor does it only show the bad ones on TV, it comends great tradesmen also.

sadly its these guys that give everyone else a bad rep. you just can't tell whos good/trustworthy or not. heck one of the episodes had one of them having a wank on it.

if you are one of thee guys then you shoudl be insulted, if you are a good tradesperson then be confident that you are not the target of my comments. you think lawyers get all offended when people say they don't like lawyers, or dentists get all offended when people say they hate dentists?

What area are you in with those prices? I have about 36 linear feet in the kitchen. The custom guy quoted me $250/linear with average countertops. $225 without countertops. I'm thinking granite or granite tile for the counters. The granite tile saves over $1500 over 3cm granite.

Well, I think stereotyping any profession the way alltaken did is rather stupid.
That kind of bashing tells a lot more about the basher then about the target.

Yes I know there are lots of drunk painters, doctors, judges, plumbers, presidents, and especially vet's.

Stereotyping is simply stupid.
