have acer travelmate 7720 laptop but some reason fan won't spin so bought another fan spill don't spin so think its a heat sensor so instead of trying to fix sensor i want to extend wire to outside of machine to usb port and run like that can it be done or will it fry?

It should should work if the fan is 5v.

should the yellow wire be hooked some way because fan seems to spin slowly and yes fan is 5 v at 0.5 ma checked volts on usb says reads 8.2 volts i thought usb where 5v mines a little more for some reason thanks for the reply

The usb port should be 5 volt regulated. The 8.2 volt suggest something could be wrong on your mobo (may be this is related to why your fan won't work the first place). If the voltage is higher than 5v, I would think the the fan to spin quite a lot faster than it would be on 5v unless the fan cannot draw enough current. Is this happening to all port?
