i might guess around 3000-4000 lbs for a single line of rope in perfect
condition in straight tension.

my basis for this is that rope has a burst DC of 23, which can be made
by a creature of strength 36 taking 10, and the maximum carry for such
a creature is 3680 lbs. the maximum safe load would thus be 200 lbs.
(a creature of strength 15 cannot make a DC 23 check even by taking 20,
and the maximum carry for such a creature is 200 lbs.)

for very heavy loads, loads on worn rope, or in poor conditions, you
might calculate the strength necessary to lift that load, and make a
strength check with the corresponding modifier to determine if the rope
bursts.

There is no point in smoking hemp, because what makes good hemp, makes
really bad pot.

Unless you're down to scraping resin from the one-hitter, then even bad pot
starts to sound promising. ;)

www.knotandrope.com
They list some of the specs for various types of modern rope.
I'm sure you can find more with google and more than a couple
minutes.

There was a good article about ropes in the most recent
issue of Pyramid. If you subscribe to it, tell tehm that
sagatafl sent you, then my subscription will be extended by
one month.

I was particularly glad to finally get the whole silk rope
mess cleared up.

Thank you, it is too bad I am not a subscriber to pyramid. Although I am
not going to subscribe for just one article.

The price is good for it, a comic, and several articales on assorted
games weekly for only $20 a year.
