It doesn't matter, just a feeler question I guess to see what some folks would do. I'm leaning towards a P4 personally but I haven't ruled out an XP something yet either. I've seen some decent deals for both systems lately.

You did what??

~~~"I've seen some decent deals for both systems lately"~~~
Well if you looking at systems like that then just go within your budget. If you want to piece together a system then your talk alittle faster and cheaper.
Personally I'm and amd whore. So I am not up to par with intels pricing but to say the least I know its up there.
I also know that Soyo have has 533 board with raid and ata 133 with the new 400 buss and many others. Its the P4S Dragin ultra. From there your looing at at a video card that will be around th 250 marker but a GeForce 4 is worth it.
If you want know smoe AMD set up let me know
Well, I'll give you my suggestion.
The price may differ a bit, depending on where you live (I'm from Bulgaria).
First, I advise you to get a P4 platform - because you might be sure you may upgrade lately the CPU with newer one.
CPU: K7 2200+
Mainboard: Gigabyte 7VRXP
HDD: WD 120 GB, 8 MB cache, 7200 RPM
RAM: 3 pcs x 512 MB DDR 333 MHz
Graphic Card: GeForce4 Ti 4600
CD-R: Sony 40x/12x48 (OEM)
DVD: Sony 16x/40x (OEM)
Case: Midi, 300W ATX
FDD: Sony
fans
The total cost is 1572. But in Bulgaria. It will be cheaper in the USA, for instance
Yeah that'd be good. I actually have a few quotes for Athlon machines, and only 1 for P4 right now. I'm not so up on putting it together myself, specially for a machine I want to depend on, so I'll probably start buying some older things at some point to try to learn some stuff with. I appreciate any suggestions and advice on systems. I've been researching this stuff for about 2 weeks and I have way more to learn than I'd ever thought, but at least some of it makes sense!
Buy and Gamecube and send the extra to me ;)
Seriously, You'd want to get a nice Video card, probably a higher end Athlon or P4, at least 512 MB of ram, and a TI4600 or Radeon 9700.
With that kind of money, waiting for the 9700 next month might be a good idea. Should probably end up being abotu $350 online after the first 2 weeks.
Well, if you're American, newegg.com is a pretty good store to order from. Then if you're really not up to putting it yourself, send to to some corner shop and get them to.
HEre's a possible P4 config.(If you're gonna overclock of course :smile: )
P4 2.26B 512K L2, 478 Socket Retail - $274
ABIT IT7 MAX/EPoX EP-4G4A+ - $151/138
512MB Corsair PC3200 XMS - $232
120GB WD SE w/ 8MB cache - $172
Lite-On 16x DVD Model LTD-163 Black - $55
Lite On 40X12X48 CDRW OEM BLACK - $70
SONY 1.44MB 3.5 INCH INTERNAL FDD DRIVE BLACK - $15
ANTEC Performance PLUS (BLACK) Model PLUS1080- with Antec Original TRUE P4 Power Supply 430Watt - $135
ATi Radeon 9700 - MSRP $399 (probably more like $350 @ newegg)
VOYETRA TURTLE BEACH SANTA CRUZ - $59
For: $1513
Well, that would be a kickin black system and you could easily pare down the cost by getting a 100GB/80GB HDD if you don't need the 120GB. Then getting a chieftec case could also reduce prices.
I'm probably gonna get th IT7 mobo, but I'd really think about the EPoX too. The reason I'm not getting it is cause I can't get it in Canada (I haven't found it). I'd wait til the middle of next month, cause then the Radeon 9700 will actually ship and from any benchmark almost, the R9700 beats the Ti4600 handily. Plus you'll get the DX9 features.
:smile: Falling down stairs saves time :smile:
I'll build you a top of the line P4 system for $1500. Here's how it works: You order $1350 in parts and send them to me, I put it together for $100, and use the other $50 for shipping an insurance.
If something is defective it will be returned for exchange, of course. I recommend newegg.com as the supplier because of their wide selection, low prices, and decent exchange policy.
