Just Installed a Slot A

I recently bought a 850mhz TBird Athlon and installed it (replaced a 599mhz Athlon) but all I am getting on my screen is lines of snow. I have removed and retried a dozen times but I either get different lines of snow, or blocks of red and blue and then the snow. Does anyone know if this means my processor is 'bad' or is there something other than plugging it into the slot I have to do.
Thank you for any help you can give.

I don't think the orignal boards were compatable with Slot A Tbirds, I believe Slot A Tbirds were initially only available to OEM's using newer chipsets on older board designs.

What's your mobo?
A friend of mine bought a K7 1 GHz for Slot A. He was with ASUS mobo, I think it was with KX-133 chipset.
HAve you updated BIOS???
