My primary choice for a CPU is currently an AMD 1800+, but I'm wondering if there are any compatability issues associated with it. The AMD seems to be a good deal, but I just want to make sure I'm not making a mistake. Also, which model of the processor would be best? Thanks!

Gaming PC in progress, suggestions welcome :)

I own an AMD AXP 1800+ since December of 2001...so far it works fine and I haven't encountered any problems...played CS , Max Payne, Quake III and Warcraft III on it with enhanchements in each games' options enabled and in maximum settings...

my system uses Abit KR7A, 768 DDR RAM, Radeon 8500 64MB, 60GB Maxtor 7200 RPM HDD.

AMD Athlon XP's are cheap and will give you good performance. Don't worry about heat issues, as long as you have a heatsink and fan installed on your AXP CPU then it won't burn or anything...I play at least 4 hours straight daily and more during the weekends. My AXP 1800+ is still working fine!

the 1800+ is a great value right now. I'd say go for it and dont worry about those stories about cracking cores with .009 pounds of pressure, instant overheating and burnouts and horrible instability problems. Its usually the user, not the computer.

yep!
XP1800+ is great for games. lots of grunt onhand for all your gaming needs. but just remember that the most important thing is a good graphics card to match. at least a Geforce 4 4200 or radeon 8500.

p.s. and if your running win2k or XP, i advise u get 512mb ram. games are hungry beasts
