I have had my Dell desktop for 5 yrs and it runs VERY SLOWLY. Taken the usual steps of checking viruses, defragging etc etc. Decided to buy new equipment. Have about 11,000 songs and 1,000 photos on there. Others uses mainly, but not only, Excel & wordprocessing, Webcam, cutting cds. I am retired so can't afford to update more than every 5 years.Current machine spec is Intel Pentium 4 processor 3.2 ghz
512 mb ram (dual channel 2 x 256)
120 gb hard drive
128 mb ATI radeon 9800 Pro grahics card.
Ideally want something with fewer wires so either laptop or integrated processor/monitor and something to match above spec.
Don't know if should go for laptop or desktop, Apple or Windows? (currently Windows user). ANY ADVICE MOST WELCOME!!

I'd get a MacBook Pro laptop. Every PC with windows on it becomes slower after some time.

I am not a self indulgent mac owner. In fact, I don't own a mac.
But I gonna buy a macbook after some time.

Yes, it is a bit more expensive but that's because it is much better than pc/windows laptop.

Mac laptops are not better than pc laptops, nor are the desktop pcs..They have pony video cards compared to the pc variants.

Yes they are smarter looking but theres been some smart looking pc/ laptops from Leonovo for example. Sony do some good all in ones.

Plus there's netbooks dont forget. That Samsung range is stunning pieces of kit.

Macs are now cross dressed pcs. I have a Mac OS running on my PC right now. All a mac is is a fancy pc for twice ( at least ) the price.

A Macs background was to do one thing mainly design and publishing documents, image maniplulation and making porn magazines ( and amoungst others ).

They are not a thinking persons pc, but a designers pc - if you just want to work within the and dont want to experience other sides to computers then a mac is there, but they are not as flexible as a pc will ever be.

A mac has had its strong points but now pcs are just as good if not better in many areas with "mac" only software now on pc.

All the latest films ( cartoon based ) are produced on pcs now.

There is not one bit of software that is not on a pc which is mac based.

Rosie

My advise to you Rosie is get a PC for which you are used to. There is no need to drive on the other side of the road when you dont have to, this time you'll be driving a different car with a smoother ride, thats all.

You need quite a large amount storage for the future, a back up device for all your valuable photographs and tunes. And a machine built of decent components which none of the brand name companies seem to do anymore. The major manufacturers make machines all the same now and nothing stands out as amazing quality anymore. HP, Dell, etc all are all guilty of this..

I looked at a Alienware Laptop the other day ( which are regarded as one of the best ) machine to repair the other day and it was a Clevo Laptop rebadged - it looked really cheap up close. ( really disapointed me that one )

There are many components from budget to mid range to high end but at the end of the day you get what you pay for.

How many units do Dell shift? I use one at work way more than I use my home brew rig at home. They are fine for most applications other than serious games. Businesses don't buy junk that will fail in a short time, they need that stability.

It's like a Ford, not sexy but ultimately a reliable enough offering.

What, low cost, reliable enough and sold world wide. Yeah, just like 'em. The reason you hate them so much is that it's killed the market for small store built rigs. I used to build myself but gave up a few years back when it became clear there was no market thanks to the big players. It really is games rigs that are the exception to make the rule, everybody else is buying budget laptops.

I dont sell my pcs on price, but on service alone.

You dont get a box from me, you get a smooth experience. Thats how to sell it.

I come in. Look at their old machine. Recover their data. Advise them on a new one. Transfer data from old hard disk to new. Make sure its all configured and voila. A happy customer who has paid for a service to have their pc done..Advise on routers, wireless, security, child protection etc.

To try and compete with the likes of Dell is suicide and I welcome the days when Dell et al go pop as we will pick up the mess..

I can tell you now Dell are not selling as much as they used to and that doesnt include the recession as some people have had real bad experiences with them and will never go back..

And thats all good for people like me.

Just replaced my aging P4 Dual Core desktop for a shiny HP DV7 lappy and if I get 3 years out of it ( have warranty for 3yrs ) before handing down to the kids I'll be happy.

6 months ... but at least it allows me to spam on about me lappy. :D

You said you want to upgrade every 5 years. A recent independent study was done recently, and it showed pretty much all laptops will have major issues in or before 3 years. So if the 5 years is important, get a desktop. A real one, not a all in one, to last 5 years you need good air flow to keep components cool.

Hi Rosie,

I use both mac's and pc's, but you should go for PC's because there's alot of freeware software out there for PC's.

Macs look far better compared to a PC, they are designed by experts to be appealing.

There's one person here who converted a Mac G3 into a PC

http://www.petervis.co.cc/G3PC/G3PC_1.html

I'm thinking of doing this mod because it's the best of both worlds.

hope this helps
