I was surfing the net and wanted to go to http://www.doctorwhoforum.com just to lurk and see what is being discussed and then I see the forum is private

which is okay I guess although I am weary of any admin that is so paranoid they don't trust robots.txt to do it's job

Then I hit this Little Tidbit while trying to register

The email address you are attempting to use is banned from the forum. This error typically occurs when new registrants try to use a free email service (such as Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail) to create their accounts. Free email accounts are generally not allowed for use on the Doctor Who Forum, but from time to time the rule is rescinded. If you do not have any other method of email access, and the rule is active when you attempt to register, we're sorry but you will be unable to join the forum. You may keep trying at later dates in case the rule is deactivated. To contact the administrator click here (please note that we are unable to say when the no-free-email-accounts rule will be active or inactive). We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is necessary to maintain a smooth-running forum of this size.

I could use the account that comes with my DSL instead of my trustee gmail to register but at this point it is my impression that the mods are out of control. So I got to ask does anyone know what happened to spin the mods off into space? Was it like the short lived howardstern.com forum where trolls started posting personal info?

No, the mods aren't in overload   They're actually pretty damn cool!

See, doctorwhoforum.com is the biggest Doctor Who forum - hence the name - (although I thought 'Outpost Gallifrey' sounded much better) so we get a lot of members, right? Well, that also includes a lot of people who actually work on the show! So imagine what would happen if a bot got in? Any post they might have said, going out, getting read, perhaps misquoted...

Yeah, I know it's a hassle with the 'no free email' rule, however, both myself and a heck of a lot of people I know did get in with yahoo accounts. Trust me, if all you had was the free account, I'd say it was worth the wait, and if you've got a paid acount, use it. They don't send anything to it (other than the activation mail) unless you've specifically set your profile to give you email notifications.

Once you've registered, there's a 1-2 day wait as your profile is approved and processed, and then you're ready to roll.

Seriously, it's one of the most civilized forums I've been to in my life. The people are friendly, there's always something to do, and if you hang out in the right places, you can even get behind-the-scenes tidbits on the show itself! The moderators and admins are helpful and friendly, and because the forum is 'safe,' they're not completely overwhelmed. They come out among us and talk like real people (which they are, of course.) Because they have the time to.

So are they overdoing it with the 'protecting our users' bit? I personally don't think so. It might be a hassle, but it's worth it.
