I have a 5 port Ethernet panel in the wall going to 5 rooms/computers.
I have an ethernet/network capable printer.
I have DSL
I don't have the router yet.
So I take it I want the DSL line to go to the modem, the modem to go into the router, and the 5 ethernet lines from the 5 port panel going into the back of the router. That connects the 5 computers to the net.
How do I connect the printer? Is it just a matter of having a 6 port hub and connecting it into the hub? It's sitting next to the hub so that's not a problem.
Any recommendations?

Yeah, you will need an additional port and something to make the printer networkable. When you say 5 port panel, do you mean a 5 port switch / hub, or a 5 port wall jack? If you mean the second, you are probably screwed, because I haven't seen a 5 port router (but I haven't looked). If you mean the first option, then you are still in trouble, because you have to lose a port on a switch to uplink it. Plug the printer into the router (very likely 4 ports), and then take one port from the router to the switch, and another line from the router to feed the last PC.
If you don't have a switch, I would buy an 8 port switch or so to give you (a little) room for future expansion.

you could have a main machine in one room dedicated as yopur print server and share out the printer across the network(actually hook the printer up via usb or parallel to the computer) and never turn it off. no extra router needed.

Let me just be clear so I don't screw this up. I have so much stuff on my plate that I can't afford to screw anything up.
I bought a HP color laserjet 2840 for the office that I'll use as a printer and fax machine for all 5 computers.
So I have the DSL>ROUTER and then the 5 port patch panel leading 5 lines into the back of the router. If I have a 6th port can I just plug the printer directly into the router and it will be accessable by any of the computers on the network? I don't want a seperate machine running anything since I would think the router could take of that. Am I wrong?
I see why some of you are saying use a port to link to a switch, but if I can get a 7 or 8 port router wouldn't that be better?

Depends on the cost. A 4port router and a 4 port switch will cost about $100 dollars max. How much will the 7 or 8 port router cost?
You might lose 1 or 2 ms ping time with the switch but otherwise there is no difference in function.

1) Plug the printer into a PC directly and share it at that PC. That means you need to leave the PC on in order to print. Not really what you want.
2) Plug the printer into the network as if it was a computer. It needs a port on the router/switch/hub just like a computer would. The software installation should take care of the rest.

If you're getting the printer and it has a built in network jack, then you can plug it into the router directly You'll set it up with static IP address, and all 5 computers will be able to see it. You could even set up a switch ahead of your router as everyone else said and hook all your devices into that. You might look into 1-1 routers that have just the in and out ports, and get a cheap 8 or 12 port switch, which may be cheaper.
