Hello everyone out there, i believe i saw a section on THG's main site about the new throughbred AMD AthlonXP processors requireing heatsinks that use all 3 of the "ears" for heatsink retention on the 462 socket. I'm not sure about that though.

I'm sure all of us at one time have seen a amd motherboard with a broken socket for the cpu, one of the little "ears" the heatsink would clip to broke off or got damaged, most think this board unuseable and throw it away. Well i'm asking if ANYONE out there knows of any heatsinks or for that matter JUST the clip, not the actual heatsink it's self at all, that uses all 3 of these little "EARS" to bind with, to use on a board with a broken socket. Please let me know if you have seen anything like this online, if you could provide a URL where to buy such a thing it would be appericated.

I've got a motherboard with the broken finger, I even considered going the route you're thinking about, then I discovered the four factory installed mounting holes around the 462 socket, and started looking for a solution to use those holes, and this is what I found and what I'm running right now, Swiftech MCX462, detailed specs at http://www.swiftnets.comand you can purchase online at http://www.inflowdirect.com you may also find what you're looking for at Inflow, but just to share with you, with my 462 socket finger broken already, I really didn't want to use something that could possibly damage the socket further, I've been extremely pleased with the craftmanship, and quality of the MCX462, and do not have one complaint about the product, my machine is overclocked, and under serious gaming load, my CPU temps are around the 40c range. Hope this helps some.

Thank you very much. Actually though i spoke with and showed the vendor of which i bought the damaged motherboard from, and they offerred to buy me a heatsink with 3 retention clips on it, rather than deal with returns and lost money with restocking, etc.

I was shown several and this is the one i ended up choosing:

its going to be a web server so i plan to load up a 88 CFM fan from delta on it, since its a server noise is no issue.

Again, thanx for actually responding anyway, and i had always wondered what those holes are for beside the cpus, i know this new board i bought has 2 mounting holes for a heatsink + fan over the north bridge chipset, as well as those 4 beside the cpu you spoke of.

I see you have solved your problem already.

If you run into anyone else with a broken "ear" below is a dirt cheap heatsink that works surprisingly well (especially if you swap in a Delta fan). I bought it for a backup just in case the above problem happens to me. I later discovered it did a great job cooling an overclocked Tbird 1.0 ghz @ 1.56 ghz.

I'd still be using it except I got tired of the noise from the 60mm Delta and I didn't feel the stock fan was good enough for overclocking. The manufacturer claims the HSF is good up to 1.7 ghz but I assume that's at stock speeds not overclocked. Anyway, it's better than nothing in a pinch.

By the way, Nexfan.com is a great vendor.
